MUNCIE, Indiana -
On Friday the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team defeated Ball State 188.100-187.050, to remain undefeated in Mid-American Conference competition. The Falcons were led by their upper-classman, Breanne Guy and Jacque Bernhardt. Guy scored a season high 38.550 winning the all-around, and Bernhardt scored a 9.750 and a 9.725 to win the vault and floor respectively.
Head coach Kerrie Beach was content with the team's win, but wished they would perform better. "A win is a win, and we remain undefeated in the MAC. However, this meet was disappointing because we do not compete like we practice. This team does so well in practice and I wish I could get them to show that in the meets. Tonight our inexperience really showed."
While the seven inexperienced freshman had a rough night the upperclassmen took actions into their own hands as Guy and Bernhardt were accompanied by Morgan Balzer, Katie Follett and Queenita Gamble. The Falcons took first and second on every event except bars.
The team started the event on bars where they scored their lowest team total on the season. Guy finished in second (9.575) followed by Balzer in third (9.550) and Follett in fourth (9.500). The event was won by Ball State's Bibiana Rodgiquez who scored a 9.650. BGSU was without their leader in Michelle Luchini who was out for the meet.
Next the team took to vault where they would compete with only five girls in the line-up. Bernhardt and Guy tied for first with marks of 9.750. Jenna Wirtanen placed fourth with a 9.550. As a team the Orange and Brown scored a 47.825 also a season low.
BGSU's third rotation was the floor. Here the team hoped to build some momentum on one of their best events. Bernhardt tied her season high of 9.725 winning her the event. Meg Satterlee took second with a 9.675. Guy tied for third (9.650), while Gamble placed sixth (9.550).
In their last event the Falcons were hoping to end the meet on a high note. Unfortunately that did not happen as they would place their lowest event score on the season at 45.450. However, there were some high notes. Follett and Gamble both tied for first with a 9.600. Guy followed up in third with a 9.575.
After tonight's meet the team will go back to the drawling boards to work out the kinks before they face Central Michigan. This meet will be on Saturday, February 16 inside the Eppler Complex beginning at 7:00 p.m. Not only will the team be coming home to a rowdy BG home crowd but the meet will also be Alumni Night, where the Falcons will welcome back many familiar faces.
"Next week it is going to be crucial that everyone hits," said Beach. "The team can not wait to come home. We are ready to compete in front of a welcoming home crowd. We are hoping that competing at home is just the thing we need to turn things around."
