The Big Red and Hawkeyes Down the Falcons in Florida

DELAND, Florida - Day two of the Stetson Spring Classic pitted the Falcons against the Cornell Big Red and the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Orange and Brown took on the Big Red in game one of the double-header losing 7-0. The Falcons then took on Big Ten opponent the Iowa Hawkeyes and fell 2-0.
Despite two loses BG had four players hit .333 batting average or better for the day. Emily Gouge led the Falcons on the day hitting .500 with three hits including two doubles. Missy Bowman recorded two hits on the day going two-for-five with .400 batting average with one double. Zada Lines and Hayley Wiemer both hit .333 batting average.
Against Cornell University
The Big Red struck first scoring two runs in bottom of the first inning. The Falcons came back and started to get their bats going as Lines recorded the first of three doubles by Falcons smashing a line drive to right center. The Falcons weren't able to score in the top of the second but the Big Red scored four runs in the bottom of the second taking a 6-0 lead over the Falcons. In the top of the third it was Gouge's turn to drive a double to right center, the first of her career.
The Falcon defense was able to keep the Big Red scoreless in the bottom of the third, fourth, and fifth inning. In the top of the sixth Bowman got the Orange and Brown bats started with a lead-off double to right center, the third double for the Falcons. Dawnjene DeLong followed up Bowman with a single to the right side of the infield, however the Big Red once again kept BG scoreless. Cornell was able to pick up another run in the bottom of the sixth, extending their lead to 7-0. In the top of the seven Lines and Gouge were each able to come up with a single for their second hit of the game but it wasn't enough for the Falcons to score, losing to Cornell, 7-0.
The Falcon bats were led by Emily Gouge and Zada Lines each going two-for-three with a .667 batting average smashing a double and a single. Gouge tied her career high two hits in a single game and had her first multiple hit game of the season, while Lines recorded her second multiple hit game of the season. Missy Bowman also blasted a double to right field going one-for-two with .500 batting average. Gouge, Lines and Bowman all hit their first career double against the Big Red and ended game one with 1.000 slugging percentage. DeLong extended her hitting streak to four games with a single in the top of the sixth.
Against University of Iowa
The Falcons faced off against their first Big Ten opponent of the season, the Iowa Hawkeyes, one of the eight teams not in the USA Today/NFCA top 25 to receive votes.
The Hawkeyes scored in the top of the first inning off of two singles and a stolen bases taking an early 1-0 lead over the Falcons. The Falcons were kept scoreless in the bottom of the first.
Both teams were scoreless in the second and third inning but the Falcons got their offense started as Emily Gouge hit her second double of the day in the bottom of the second.
The Hawkeyes struck again in the top of the fourth inning off of a homer to left field taking a 2-0 lead over the Falcons. In the bottom off the fourth Hayley Wiemer came back for the Falcons blasting a double to right center.
Both teams were scoreless the rest of the game with the Falcons picking up three more hits in the last three innings and only allowing the Hawkeyes two more hits.
In game two of the double-header the Orange and Brown offense was led by Wiemer going two-for-three hitting .667 and a 1.000 slugging percentage with a double and a single, which is her third multiple hit game of the season. Gouge also hit her second career double against the Hawkeyes.
The Falcons will return to the diamond to wrap up the Stetson Spring Classic on Sunday (Mar. 16) against another Big Ten opponent and regional foe Michigan State at 9:30 a.m. The Falcons currently lead the Spartans 11-6 in the all-times series. The last meeting between the two teams took place last year on Mar. 28th where the Falcons crushed the Spartans 11-1 in six innings.
