BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Senior Kate Achter had a double-double and set two school records as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team downed the University of Dayton, 64-52, Thursday night (March 20). The game, a first-round contest in the Women's National Invitation Tournament, was held at venerable Anderson Arena.
With the win, the Falcons now improve to 26-7 on the season, and BGSU advances to WNIT second-round action. The Falcons will head to East Lansing, Mich., for a Saturday (March 22) game at Michigan State University. Game time is 2:00 p.m. at MSU's Breslin Center.
Dayton sees the 2007-08 season come to an end with a record of 25-9.
Achter had 15 points and a game-high 10 assists in the process of breaking the school's career and single season assist records. For her career, she has contributed 681 assists while dishing 230 this season. Achter now owns two of the top five single season assist tallies and is the only Falcon with the particular claim to fame.
Sophomore Lindsey Goldsberry scored a game-high 16 points, while freshman Lauren Prochaska rounded out BGSU's list of double-digit scorers with 11 points. Prochaska also etched her name in the record books surpassing Jackie Motycka as the all-time top freshman scorer. Motycka, the all-time leading scorer in BGSU history, accounted for 472 of her 2,122 points as a rookie - with another game to be played, Prochaska has 478 pts. in one season with BGSU.
Also to be noted, the win was No. 150 for head coach Curt Miller and his staff, while Achter and fellow senior Whitney Taylor push their record to 108-22. The duo average exactly 27 wins per season while at BGSU.
For the Flyers, Karah Cloxton and Nikki Oakland had 14 points apiece.
BGSU forced 26 UD turnovers, and the Falcons owned advantages in points off turnovers (25-15), second-chance points (17-2) and fast-break points (12-2). The Flyers had a slim 34-33 rebounding advantage, but UD had just three offensive boards.
In addition to her double-double, Achter led the Falcons and tied for game honors with seven rebounds. Oakland paced the visitors with seven boards as well.
By 15:29 Dayton had jumped ahead to a seven point lead allowing BGSU to score just one field goal, a Crystal Murdaugh jumper in the paint, but the Falcons would soon rally with a 7-0 run to tie the game at nine at the 11:28 mark.
Led by three of their seven seniors, UD would merge ahead to keep the game a one-possession battle until Goldsberry hit her first of three important three point field goals.
The first, a crowd pleaser, helped the Falcons to tie the score at 17-17 with 6:15 remaining in the half. Back-to-back buckets by Jennifer Uhl then gave BGSU its first (and last) lead of the game in the ensuing minute of play, 21-17 (5:11).
In their next trip into scoring territory, UD's Cloxton would single handedly cut the lead to a point with her own trey, 21-20, but within a blink of an eye, Prochaska and Achter would combine for five points to forge ahead, 26-20, with 3:41 until the break. Dayton, led by Oakland's four points would work toward the Falcons' score until they were within a field goal, but the Flyers could not find a way to land on even ground with the hosts.
Appearing as if they would take a four point advantage into the lockerroom, 28-24, Goldsberry hit her second three pointer of the night to up the BGSU edge to seven, 31-24. The junior's 52nd three of the season hit the bottom of the net with just two ticks left on the game clock.
At the half, Dayton hit their conference average of 13 turnovers - at the same time, BGSU had committed four rule infractions.
In the second, BGSU used a 6-0 scoring run to go ahead as many as 13 points, yet once again Dayton's seniors enabled the Flyers to make a run of their own, but would not be able to cut the lead to less than eight points through the first seven minutes of play.
By 12:58, finding themselves down 10, the Flyers engineered second chance comebacks lowering the deficit to six, 50-44, at 8:49 and once again at 5:15, 54-46, but the Falcons stamped their ticket to the next round with the one-two punch of Tara Breske's fast break points at 5:15 and Goldsberry's final three at 3:30 to seal the 11 point lead.
Through the remainder of play, Bowling Green would allow the Flyers to lessen their lead to single digits just once as a result of Cloxton's free throws at 39 seconds, 61-52, but quickly regained the double-digit advantage as a result of Achter's free throws three seconds later.
Tonight's win was BGSU's first WNIT win in program history and only the second to be played in front of a home crowd.
