BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - On Saturday the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team was downed by No. 19 Kentucky 191.375-193.400. Kentucky was just too much for the Falcons as they claimed the top four spots in every event. With this loss the Falcons end their regular season at 9-12. The team celebrated senior night and said goodbye to Jacque Bernhardt, Ashlee deLeeuw, Jholeen Ponce, Marissa Saneholtz, and Candice Deacon.
It was a rough night for all the Falcons as they had to say goodbye to five great gymnastics, but it was especially hard for head coach Kerrie Beach, "senior night was exciting. That was my first recruiting class, so it was especially hard to see them get out there and finish their last BG home meet. Jacque especially ended on a high not by hitting a solid floor routine."
The Orange and Brown started the meet off on vault by posting their third lowest vault score on the season at 48.000. As she did on every event Breanne Guy posted the top score for BGSU at 9.775. UK claimed the top four spots with the highest coming at 9.850. Jenna Wirtanen continues to step up as she finished seventh with a 9.676.
The team had a rough outing last week on bars as they had a team score of 47.425. The team put in a lot of focus on that event and moved the score up to a 47.875. Again the top four spots went to UK; however, Guy tied for fourth with a 9.650. Megan Chronister followed behind in sixth with a 9.600, which is a new season high for her. Lexi Psichopaidas had a nice routine earning her a 9.550 tying her with Ponce for seventh.
Beach was very pleased with how her Bars team came back from last weeks rough outing. "I was really proud of the bars night they really came back after last weeks little stumble. So that was great to see our bars line-up come out and make positive changes. It was obviously disappointing to see our beam team stumble because they worked so hard in practice and especially after last week's performance."
The team struggled on the beam having three girls fall off. Guy held down the seventh spot with a 9.700. Katie Follett had a strong routine placing her in eighth with a score of 9.650.
The Falcons ended the meet on floor, which has been a strong event for the team this season. Guy scored a 9.750 followed closely behind by Bernhardt with a 9.725. Rachel Gourley came in eighth with a 9.650. As a team BGSU posted a 48.375 their third highest on the season.
"That gives us things to work on next week which is good going into MACs," Beach said. "It is good going into MACs with things to work on. It helps to show the girls that they can do better they just have to put it all together next week."
With the conclusion of this meet the team will be putting all their attention toward the Mid-American Conference Championships next week. That meet will be at Kent State and will showcase all seven MAC schools competing for the title of MAC Champions. It will be held Saturday March 29th at 2:00 p.m.
Beach is excited for next week and what her team can do. "We will be looking to fix a few things going to MACs next week. We want to go into the meet as confident as we can. Our goal is to go for hits on every routine!"
