LAST TIME OUT
A four-run eighth-inning helped the Bowling Green State University baseball team put some distance between themselves and the Findlay Oilers on Wednesday en route to a 12-8 victory in their season-opener at Warren E. Steller Field. The Falcons, who improved to 8-7 with the victory, slugged out a season-high 17 hits in the effort off five different Oiler pitchers to earn their seventh win in the last eight contests, while the Oilers fell to 7-8.
BG earned the victory despite falling behind 3-0 after the first two Oiler at bats, before they would rally to hold a 6-3 advantage after the fifth. UF would tie the game back up at 7-7 going into the bottom half of the seventh, but a lone run in the bottom of the seventh and a four-spot in the eighth would propel the Falcons to 12-7 lead, which would be too much for the Oilers to overcome.
The win gave the Falcons 12-straight in the series going back to May 3rd of 1978 as they out-hit the Oilers 17-14 on the afternoon and committed just one error to UF's two.
Leading the way on the day at the plate for the Falcons was sophomore centerfielder T. J. Blanton. The Sandusky, Ohio native went 3-for-4 at the plate and had a game-high four RBI, including his first homer of the season in BG's big eighth inning.
Earning the win on the mound was Brian Hangbers (1-0) who pitched the eighth inning, allowing a single hit and recording two strikeouts to earn his first victory of the season. Hangbers, who started the game at first base, also came up big at the plate on the afternoon, as he was one of six Falcons to finish with multiple-hits. The lefty went 3-for-5, accounting for one run and one RBI.
FALCON HOME OPENERS AND CONFERENCE HOME OPENING GAMES
It hasn't taken long for the Falcons to enjoy success at home over the last 15 seasons, as they are now 13-2 in their last 15 home openers with Wednesday's victory over Findlay. The win moved their current home opening win streak to 11-straight games as they last lost their home opening game at Warren Steller Field during the 1996 season when they fell 2-1 to visiting Miami. Coupled with those hot home starts has been wins in their home opening MAC weekends as the Falcons are 18-10 in the last 10 seasons in their conference home opening weekends and 30-13 in the last 15 seasons.Last season though, the Falcons were swept in their conference home opening weekend against Eastern Michigan falling 10-2, 11-8 and 7-3.
SHAY IS HIS NAME AND HITTING IS HIS GAME
Few players in the MAC have been as hot at the plate as Bowling Green's Ryan Shay in the first 15 games of the season. Shay, who is currently hitting a league-best .444, has 28 hits on the season in 63 at bats as he is already just 23 hits shy of his hit total from last season. The Garden City, Mich. native has hit safely in 13 of BG's 15 games this season and has 11 multiple-hit efforts, including three games with three or more hits. Shay currently leads the MAC in hits per game as he averages 1.87 base knocks per contest.
BAIRD CLEARS THE BASES
Falcon junior Marty Baird had a moment to remember on Mar. 13 in the Falcons' 9-3 win at Cincinnati. With the bases loaded full of Falcons in the second inning, the Findlay, Ohio native hit his first career grand slam over the wall in left to give BG a commanding 8-1 lead. It marked the first time the Falcons have recorded a four-RBI homer since Kurt Wells did so last season on Feb. 25th in the Falcons' 8-6 win at Middle Tennessee State.
SENIOR CAPTAIN STARTS TO SHINE
One of the biggest reasons for the Falcons success in the past eight games has been their pitching and few on the squad have been more dominate on the mound than senior captain Nick Cantrell. The Waldo, Ohio native was 2-0 in the last eight games with a 0.71 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 12.2 innings of work, getting a victory in two of his three appearances. The right-hander struck out a career-best six batters in back-to-back appearances, doing so in 4.2 innings at Florida Gulf Coast and in six innings in game one at Murray State. Cantrell leads the Falcon pitching staff with 22 strikeouts in 19.2 innings of work as he is 2-2 overall on the season with a 4.12 ERA.
THE WIN STREAK THAT REACHED FIVE
With their game one victory last Friday at Murray State, the Falcons accomplished something already in 2008 that they hadn't done in 2007 - win five-straight games. BG last won five-straight games during the 2006 season during late March and early April (Mar. 29-Apr. 8) when they won seven-straight contests. Last season, the Falcons longest win streak was four games (Feb. 24 - Mar. 4) as they also won three-straight on two separate occasions. Under head coach Danny Schmitz, BG's longest win streak is 11 games, which they accomplished during the 1999 season when they won 11-straight from May 8th to May 21st.
