AMHERST, N.Y. -- The host University at Buffalo scored early and often, racing past the Bowling Green State University men's basketball team, 96-50, Tuesday night (March 4). The Mid-American Conference game was held at Alumni Arena on the UB campus.
With the win, the Bulls improved to 10-18 overall and 3-12 in MAC action, while the Falcons drop to 13-15 and 7-8, respectively.
Greg Gamble led Buffalo with 23 points, while Andy Robinson added 18 off the bench. Jawaan Alston rounded out UB's double-digit scorers with 13 points on the evening.
For the Falcons, junior Brian Moten and redshirt freshman Chris Knight had 11 points apiece.
The Bulls'46-point winning margin was its largest ever over a MAC opponent. UB shot 52.5 percent from the field in the first half, in racing to a 52-26 lead at the intermission. The Bulls cooled off slightly in the second half, ending the game with a 50.0% field-goal rate. The Falcons shot 32.8% from the field on the evening.
BG scored first, with Knight slicing through the lane, taking an entry pass from freshman Joe Jakubowski and hitting a layup just 11 seconds into the game. But, the Bulls scored eight-straight points en route to a 17-6 lead at the game's first media timeout, just 4:06 into the contest. During those first four-plus minutes, the Bulls made 7-of-8 shots from the floor.
That lead ballooned to 21-6 after a three-point play by Calvin Betts at the 14:31 mark. A Moten three-point field goal halted a 13-0 run, but UB then proceeded to score the game's next 12 points. Alston capped that run with a layup with 10:50 left in the half, and UB's lead was 33-9.
The hosts led by as many as 32 points in the opening half, as Byron Mulkey's steal and layup gave UB a 48-16 margin.
In the second half, BG never got closer than 25 points. After a Moten three-pointer with 7:46 left, the Bulls scored the next 16 points over a span of nearly six minutes, taking a 92-46 lead. A Gamble jumper in the last minute of play gave the hosts a 48-point lead, 96-48, before two Darryl Clements free throws closed the scoring.
Sophomore Marc Larson scored eight points for the Brown and Orange, while Jakubowski and junior Nate Miller had seven apiece and Clements six.
Twelve different UB players found the scoresheet, with Sean Smiley scoring nine and Betts and Mulkey eight each. Brian Addison had a team-high seven rebounds for the BUlls, who had a 48-34 rebounding advantage.
For the Falcons, Miller had a game-high eight boards, while Larson had six. Sophomore Otis Polk matched his career high with four blocked shots, while Jakubowski had a career-best four steals.
The Brown and Orange will close the regular season with a Sunday (March 9) game at Miami University. Tipoff is set for noon at Millett Hall in Oxford, Ohio. Then, BGSU will prepare for the First Energy MAC Tournament, with a first-round game against an opponent to be determined on Wednesday, March 12.
