Falcons Take on the Wolfpack

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - On Sunday (March 9) the Bowling Green State University gymnastics team will travel to Raleigh, North Carolina to compete in a quad-meet. The meet will consist of the host school, North Carolina State, Central Michigan and William and Mary. The competition will get underway at 7:00 p.m. The Falcons are looking to turn things around after a tough weekend where they lost back to back nights at Kent State and Penn State.
Rebounding
Last week BGSU competed in back to back nights at Kent State and then Penn State. They fell off their 193 track as they posted a 188.475 and a 189.800 respectively.
At Kent the team posted their lowest event scores on every event but beam. On beam they were led by Breanne Guy who posted a 9.750 winning her the event. Queenita Gamble tied for fourth with a 9.675.
The team took a big loss when Morgan Balzer fell from the bar and had to leave the meet. Jholeen Ponce led the team on bars by finishing in fifth with a 9.625. Guy also posted a 9.750 on vault, placing her in third. Jacque Bernhardt finished in seventh with a 9.650. Gamble led the team on floor with a 9.600.
The team posted a point higher on Saturday night at Penn State. Vault was their strong event as the team scored a 48.250. Bernhardt had the highest score at 9.800 placing her tied for fourth. Guy landed in seventh with a 9.750. Guy flipped to a 9.650 on bars, placing her tied for fifth. Gamble has continued to perform high on beam as she scored a 9.775 in second place. Jenna Wirtanen stepped in for the injured Balzer on beam. She claimed sixth with a score of 9.625. Floor was again led by Bernhardt who landed a 9.775 and a sixth place finish.
Bouncing Back
In order for the Falcons to get back on track they are going to have to upend the No. 17 Wolfpack from NC State. The team is ranked 18th on both vault and bars, as well as 21st on beam and 15th on floor. Last week the team competed at UPenn and posted a 195.075. That is the fifth time in six meets the team has posted a 195.000 or higher. The team has been led all season by Taylor Seaman who set or tied career highs on all four events. She posted a 39.450 winning her the all-around.
The Pack comes into the meet with a record of 12-6. This will be the first time these two teams meet.
The Orange and Brown will also compete against Central Michigan. These two teams met earlier this season where BGSU edged CMU 193.350-192.775.
William and Mary comes into the meet at 4-17. They posted their best score on beam last week with a 48.000. Trica Long scored a 37.725 in the all-around to lead the Tribe. These two teams met last year where the Falcons claimed the win evening the series to 1-1.
MAC Standings
With the loss to Western Michigan and Kent State the Falcons have fallen to third in the Mid-American Conference at 3-2. KSU leads the conference at 4-0.
With a team score of 193.350 the Falcons are in 10th place. Their vault score of 48.550 also has the team sitting in 10th. They are in 11th place on bars with a team score of 48.500. The team is sitting in fourth place on floor with a score of 48.975.
Guy has the highest all-around score at 38.575 and holds the 10th spot. Bernhardt claims fourth on vault with a 9.850. Guy and Lichini both have a high score of 9.775 on bars placing them in ninth. Gamble claims the 15th spot on floor with a 9.775.
Returning Home
After their night competition on Sunday the Orange and Brown will return home to compete in Anderson Arena on March 14 at 7:00 p.m. to host Northern Illinois. They will then end their season at home hosting Kentucky on Saturday March 22 at 4:00 p.m.
