BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head women's basketball coach Curt Miller has announced the addition of Victoria McGowan to the Bowling Green State University 2008-09 roster. McGowan, a Detroit native, made her commitment official as she signed her National Letter of Intent today, Apr. 16; the first day of the late signing period.
"We are extremely excited about Victoria joining our program and family," said Miller. "She is an outstanding point guard that has the ability to score in a variety of ways."
McGowan, led Michigan's Inkster High School in scoring contributing 30 points per game. Additionally, she tallied 40-plus in three games and holds the MEGA Conference record with a 44 point effort in 2007.
"Victoria's numbers this season were eye popping and we believe we found once again a hidden gem for our program," said Miller.
Eye popping, indeed.
In addition to finding her teammates for an average of seven assists per game, McGowan also swiped four steals per contest. More impressively, the 5-4 guard grabbed an average of nine rebounds per game securing nearly a double-double every time she stepped onto the court with the Vikings last season.
"Victoria is more than just a scoring guard, she is also the best ball handling guard that we have signed during our tenure. We expect her to make an immediate impact on our program after the graduation of four-year starting point guard Kate Achter."
As a senior under coach Peggy Carr, McGowan earned placement on the Michigan Class B All-State first-team, as well as All-Metro, All-West and All-MEGA Conference first-team accolades. She will also participate in the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) All-Star Game on August 2 at Brighton High School.
"Victoria is another Falcon recruit that we believe got overlooked by larger programs. I believe she slipped through the cracks after sitting out and not playing high school basketball her junior season," said Miller. McGowan was forced to sit out her junior season after a transferring out of Inkster as a sophomore. Upon her return, MHSAA regulations dictated McGowan forfeit her junior season.
In the classroom, the daughter of Debra Leflore ranks 12th in a class of 164 students and maintains a 3.5 grade point average.
McGowan will join Maribeth Giese and Jess Slagle as the newest Falcons on next season's squad.
