BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Coach's Notes: MAC's and Regionals
We finished up our team competitive season at the MAC Championship. While we did a fantastic job on bars and beam, the team really struggled on floor. For this point in the season, we scored about one point lower than we could have on floor and it cost us dearly. I was proud that the team finished up strong on vault and we did have our second highest road score of the year at MAC's. While it was unbelievably disheartening to finish last after such a strong showing at points during the year, the level of competition was fantastic. Really, every team had a great meet! Only two teams had to count just one fall in their team score and everyone else counted no falls. MAC gymnastics is at a great level!
Looking back at the year, I am pleased that we scored over 193 three times this season. It definitely shows that our team is getting stronger and that we are on our way to scoring well next season. The loss of Meg Satterlee and Morgan Balzer during the competitive season was something we just were not able to overcome to be in the running for the MAC Championship. However, the return of Kasey Fillmore, Meg, Morgan, Amber Brewer and Anna Podgornaya will give us a great advantage next season. We are losing Jacque's vault and floor routine next year and, while she will be difficult to replace, it is encouraging that we are returning almost the entire team plus five scholarship athletes that were out for the season with injuries. So, while I wished several meets had gone better, the future is bright!
Two athletes have qualified to NCAA Regionals, Breanne Guy and Jacque Bernhardt. This is truly exciting. It has been four years since an athlete from BG has qualified, so to have two is just awesome. Bre will be competing in the all-around and Jax will be on vault. I'm so proud that they will be representing BGSU! Bre has been such a bright light in the gym; always working hard and wanting to be better than the day before. Jacque has been on the bubble to qualify throughout her career. What a gift to qualify senior year! She has worked hard for this and I hope that she has the vault of her life at LSU!
Thank you fans for staying with our program this season! You have been the best cheering section in my five years here!!! Thank you to Shannon Welker for being an awesome assistant coach. We are making positive changes and I can't wait to have you all there cheering us to a MAC Championship and team qualification to NCAA Regionals in the future!!! Our team banquet is this Saturday and I'm excited to give thanks to the people that have supported our program and honor my deserving team for the hard work they put in this season. Stay tuned for an onsite blog at NCAA Regionals April 12th from LSU! Go Falcons!
