Falcons Shutout Zips in Double Header, with an 8-0 No Hitter and 9-0 One Hitter

AKRON, Ohio - Head Coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcons closed out the 2008 regular season with a bang as the Falcons shutout the Zips, 8-0 and 9-0 in a double-header Sunday (May 4) afternoon. The Falcons defeated the Zips in five innings both games, giving up only one hit on the day. The Falcons now 17-22 overall and 14-5 in the MAC earned the number three seed in the MAC Tournament after a second place finish in the East Division.
The Falcon bats were firing on all cylinders as they out hit the Zips, 20-1. Junior Hayley Wiemer and freshman Katelynn Boso each blasted two homers on the day while senior Dawnjene DeLong added one for the Falcons. On the day the Falcons had six players hit a .429 clip or better and were led by Boso hitting three-for-four with a 2.250 slugging percentage including two homers, three RBIs and four runs scored. Vallas recorded four hits with a .667 batting average. Wiemer went three-for-five one the day with a 1.800 slugging percentage, including two homers, three RBIs and two runs scored. Emily Gouge and Zada Lines both hit a .500 clip, while DeLong went three-for-seven with a homer, a double, six RBIs and four runs scored.

The Falcon pitching staff dominated from the circle only giving up one hit in 10 innings of work. Wiemer picked up her 13th win of the season now 13-5 overall and 11-1 in the MAC as she threw a no hitter shutout in game one fanning seven batters in five innings and giving up no walks. Gouge recorded her fourth win of the season now 4-11 overall and 3-4 in the MAC as she threw a one hit shutout in game two striking out six batters in five innings, giving the Falcons their fifth sweep over a MAC opponent. Wiemer picked up her third shutout in conference play while Gouge picked up her first, they also combined for a shutout against Toledo (April 27).
"Today was a fantastic way to end the regular season," said Head Coach Shannon Salsburg. "We had fantastic pitching performances both from Wiemer and Gouge. They were on hitting their spots and really did a good job of mix and matching along with Boso behind the plate. From top to bottom we had production from our lineup. When you have that great things happen and that's what happened today. We look to use this momentum to catapult us into the MAC Tournament."
The Falcons head to the Mid-American Conference Tournament for the second straight season with Coach Salsburg at the helm and sixth consecutive season and 13th time in program history later this week May 7-10 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. The #3 seeded Falcons will match-up against #6 seeded Ohio Wednesday, May 7 at 7:30 p.m.

Game One Against Akron
In game one of the double-header Falcon hurler Hayley Wiemer earned her 11th conference win in her 11th conference start of the season as she pitched a no hitter and her third conference shutout of the season.
The Falcon offense got started in the top of the second as Allison Vallas led-off with a single to right field. With one out and bases load Rachel Delp singled to right center driving home two runs putting the Falcons on the scoreboard first, 2-0 but the offense wasn't done yet. Dawnjene DeLong followed Delp up with a two out single to drive home to two more Falcon runs. Susan Sontag then doubled to left field to drive home yet another run giving the BG a 5-0 lead over Akron.
Once again Vallas got the Orange and Brown bats going in the top of third with a lead-off single up the middle. Fellow senior Emily Gouge smashed a double to left center driving home Vallas. With one out Katelynn Boso, an Akron native blasted a two-run homer over the center field wall to score the last of the Falcons' runs, extending BG's lead 8-0 over Akron.
The Falcons recorded two more hits from Wiemer and Zada Lines in the last two innings, defeating Akron, 8-0 in game one of the double-header.
The Falcons recorded nine hits in game one against the Zips with eight different players recording a hit. Vallas led the Falcon offense going two-for-three in game one. Boso and DeLong each drove home two RBIs.
Game Two Against Akron
Game two started off similar to the first game as neither team was able to score in the first inning despite both recording a hit.

With two out in the top of the second the Falcon offense got started as freshman Lindsay Arney was given first base as she was hit by a pitch. Then five consecutive hits put the Falcons on the board multiple times as DeLong doubled off of the left center fence to score Arney and put the Falcons on the score board, 1-0. Sontag came up blasted a triple to left field driving home DeLong. Wiemer then cleared the bases as she sent her first of two homers sailing over the center field wall to extend the Falcons lead to, 4-0 over the Zips. Vallas and Gouge kept the offense going as Vallas singled through the right side and Gouge doubled to right center but the Falcons weren't able to score again in the top of the second.
The Orange and Brown were able to score again the third as Boso started the Falcon bats off with a lead-off homer soaring over the right center fence, her second homer of the day and fourth of the season.
Wiemer came back in the fourth inning blasting her second homer of the game over the right field fence giving the Falcons a 6-0 lead over the Zips. Wiemer's long ball to right field was the 11th this season tying the BGSU single season record she set last year and is the second time this season Wiemer has recorded two homers in a single game.
The Falcons scored the last of their runs in the top of the fifth as DeLong crushed a three run homer to left field, her fifth of the season.
The Falcons out hit the Zips 11-1 as seven different Falcons recorded at hit with four recording two hits in game two of the double-header. The Falcons were lead by Wiemer hitting a perfect two-for-two with a 4.000 slugging percentage including two homers and three RBIs. Vallas and Boso each went two-for-three with Boso recording a homer and a RBI. DeLong was the other Falcon to record two hits including a homer, a double and four RBIs.
