Pittsburgh entered the game ranked No. 25 in the nation by the Associated Press. BGSU’s last win over a top-25 team had come at Purdue and Northern Illinois in 2003, Gregg Brandon’s first year as head coach.
The Panthers held a 393-254 advantage in total offense for the game. After Pitt outgained BGSU by an incredible 137-6 in the first quarter, the final 45 minutes was relatively even in that category (Pitt 256, BGSU 248 over the final three quarters).
The Falcons scored 27 of the game’s final 30 points after falling behind, 14-0.
Jimmy Scheidler caught three passes for 30 yards and two touchdowns. Prior to Saturday, Scheidler had caught one career pass for negative-four yards.
BGSU had four takeaways to the Panthers’ one, and the Falcons had a 14-0 advantage in points off those turnovers.
Tyler Sheehan completed 24 passes in 40 attempts for 163 yards and a touchdown. Freddie Barnes was 2-for-2 for 27 yards and a score.
Nine different Falcon receivers caught at least one pass in the win, led by Chris Bullock’s seven receptions for 49 yards.
Bullock was also the Falcons’ leading ground-gainer, with 44 yards on seven carries, including a career-long 36-yard run.
Defensively, Jahmal Brown led the Falcons with a career-high 14 tackles, including 11 of the solo variety. Brown’s previous career best was 12 stops in last season’s win at Kent State.
Brown had seven tackles (all solo) in the first quarter, and had 10 stops with four minutes gone in the second period. He finished with a career-high 14 tackles.
On BGSU’s opening possession, Tyler Sheehan had a streak of 110 consecutive passes w/o an interception snapped.
Midway through the first quarter, Nick Iovinelli had a 79-yard punt that was downed at the Pittsburgh 2-yard line . . . the punt was a career long for Iovinelli, and tied for the third-longest in school history . . . Iovinelli’s previous long was a 55-yarder at Minnesota.
Andrew Johnson made his first career tackle early in the second quarter. He finished the game with two tackles.
Chris Bullock had a 36-yard run in the second quarter, a career-long for the junior.
Kenny Lewis had a forced fumble and a interception in the win.
