The Bowling Green State University football team had a busy day with the media this afternoon (Sept. 1) following the 27-17 win over #25 Pittsburgh, their first win over a nationally-ranked team since 2003. Here are some of their thoughts.
Gregg Brandon Quotes Critics on the defense... On Briggs' in the second half John Haneline Prior to the season, the BGSU offense was getting all the attention. Did it feel good as a defense to come out and have the type of game you did? Kenny Lewis Did the fact of what happened to you as defense in the last game of this past season just add to the accomplishment? Anthony Turner How much are you looking forward to having Minnesota come in here? Jimmy Scheidler How was the experience of Saturday for you individually?
"Surviving a game like that with a physical team like Pitt. We were more physical than them in the second half, which surprised me because were not supposed to be the one that dominates against a BCS team and that is what we did the second half of that game."
"You are only as good as the last one and we were pretty good. Our kids feed on that, all the negative stuff that is said about our run defense they just bow up on that. They were up for the challenge facing a good back and to hold him to 70 yards or whatever it was and 15 yards of rushing in the second half, I don't think anyone expected that."
"Well he is quick and they had trouble with one guy blocking him. He was able to effectively get to the quarterback. He is slippery, he can get by you and dip and not give you a big target to aim and that is what makes him effective."
What is your reaction to the huge victory at Pittsburgh this past Saturday?
"We're just enjoying this right now. As a team, we took the time to enjoy the victory on the way home from the game - having a good bus ride. A lot of the guys were goofing around and laughing. But every week, we go out there thinking we can win and we're just enjoying this right now."
"We were really excited to get out there and play as a unit. Me and Erique Dozier were talking about getting out and playing all week long leading up to the game. I thought once we got out there, we did a nice job of settling in and staying with it. At halftime we were talking about going out there and shutting them out in the second half and if we could do that - then we'd win this game. We were ready to go out and surprise people."
How big of an accomplishment was it for you as a defense to shut Pittsburgh out in the second half?
"I'm very proud of what we were able to do. Our defense did a great job of coming together and we were able to have a pretty solid effort out there. We practiced hard all week. We came together as unit during the game and got great coaching as well."
"Yeah that really does add to it. We didn't know what really to expect. We were really confident coming in because of how many veterans we have on that side of the ball, but we were still unsure of what to expect after a big loss like that. So what we did Saturday really did add to it and it allowed us to put Tulsa in the past."
How long does it take for a win like the one you had this past Saturday to sink in?
"It is definitely still sitting with us because this will be a win and an experience we'll remember the rest of our lives. It was a great win for us a team, but also a great win for this program."
"It is going to be a big game. We're going to have a nice atmosphere and the big thing for us right now will be trying to keep everyone focused. We need to kind of forget what happened this past weekend and move on to the new task at hand. But it'll be hard. It'll definitely be hard."
What was Saturday like for you?
"That is what college football is all about, being able to go into a venue like that and beat a ranked team. It was a great feeling and a great victory for us."
"Obviously for my personal goals, it was a great accomplishment. I'll take two touchdowns every game. It was a great feeling, but the team accomplishment to me overshadows everything else."
