Falcon Women Finish Third At 22nd Mel Brodt Invitational

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University men's and women's cross country squads hosted the 22nd Annual Mel Brodt Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Forrest Creason Golf Course on the campus of BGSU. On the women's side, the Falcons earned a third-place finish in the Division I standings with a team score of 59 in the 5,000 meter race, while the men placed fourth with a team score of 127 in the men's 8,000 meter event.
Individually, the BG women were led for the second-straight event by senior Kara Butler (Okemos, Mich.), who took home the sixth-spot overall and the fourth-spot in the Division I standings with a new personal-best time of 18:28. The Falcon men were then once again led by sophomore Christopher Moody (Davidsonville, Md.), who finished 22nd in the Division I standings and 24th overall with a time of 28:10.
Taking home team honors in both the women's and men's races would be the University of Cincinnati. The Bearcat women finished with a score of 39, placing three runners in the top-8 positions. The men finished with a team score of 25, as they placed eight runners in the top-15 alone and 10 total in the top-25.
Earning the individual race titles for the Bearcats would be Lilian Jelimo for the women, who finished with a time of 17:39, while Randy King took top honors in the men's 8K with a time of 25:57.
In the women's 5K, the Falcons placed six runners in the top-19 and seven total in the top-30. Finishing behind Butler in the 10th-spot in the Division I race was senior Jamie Roflow (Cincinnati, Ohio), who continued her strong comeback after missing all of 2007, with a time of 18:48. Behind her in the 12th-spot was junior Carly Wells (Palatine, Ill.), who came across the line with a time of 19:01.
Just a few more spots back of Wells, were Bowling Green natives Kylie Korsnack and Barbara Powers who finished 16th and 17th, respectively. Korsnack's time of 19:10 was a new 5K personal-best.
Other top finishing Falcons were Lyndi Springer (Celina, Ohio), who ran a new personal-best time of 19:17 to finish 19th, while Autumn Dettemann (Watertown, Wis.) ran a personal-best time of 19:45 to finish 27th.
In the men's 8K race, the Falcons would place two runners in the top-25 and four total in the top -35. Finishing behind Moody in the 25th-position in the Division I race was Jesse Smuda (Deshler, Ohio), who came across the line with a time of 28:25. Less than a minute behind him in the 31st position then was sophomore Abraham Busienei (Eldoret, Kenya), who ran a time of 29:19.
Other top finishing Falcons for the men were freshman Ben Leininger (Beavercreek, Ohio) and the pack of Aaron Smuda (Rogers City, Mich.), Jeff Ehler (Cincinnati, Ohio) and John Bernard (Worthington, Ohio), who finished in spots 36 through 38.
The two BG squads will have a week off, before returning to action on Sept. 27 at the Stanford Invitational in Palo Alto, Calif. The event will kick-off at 10:50 a.m.
