Falcons Begin MAC Play with 'West Coast' Trip this Weekend

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, riding a six-game unbeaten streak, begins Mid-American Conference play this weekend ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards will continue a five-match road swing by heading to the MAC's "West Coast" for a Friday (Sept. 26) game at Northern Illinois University ... kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. locally (5:00 p.m. Eastern) at the Huskie Track/Soccer Complex ... then, the Brown and Orange will travel to Kalamazoo, Mich., for a Sunday (Sept. 28) match vs. Western Michigan University ... kickoff is scheduled for approximately 2:30 p.m. at the WMU Soccer Complex ... on both days, BGSU's game is the second half of a doubleheader, as both the NIU and WMU men's teams play Florida Atlantic.

The Falcons enter the week with a record of 5-2-2 ... BGSU's record is the best nine-game mark in program history ... prior to 2008, the Falcons' best record through nine matches was 5-3-1, in both 1998 and 1999 ... BG also won five of the first nine games in 2000 and 2005, going 5-4-0 in each case.
LAST WEEKEND
The Falcons picked up two more shutout wins last weekend ... BGSU exploded for four second-half goals in a 4-0 win over Detroit on Friday (Sept. 19) at Cochrane Field ... then, the Brown and Orange headed to Cincinnati and picked up a 2-0 win at Xavier on Sunday (Sept. 21) ... the latter game closed the non-conference schedule ... freshman Katelyn Turner scored what would prove to be the winning goal against UDM, while classmate Leah Johnson and senior Kristin McDonald also found the back of the net ... BG's second goal of the day was an own goal ... redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault was forced to make just one save in net ... at XU, senior Corbie Yee scored just 19 seconds into the match, and sophomore Katie Stephenson doubled BGSU's lead midway through the second half ... Arsenault had five saves in that victory.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
The Falcons are 5-2-2 on the young season, after the wins over Detroit and Xavier last weekend ... BGSU closed the non-conference portion of the schedule with four consecutive wins, and the Falcons are riding a six-game unbeaten streak ... BG is 5-0-1 in that time, having outscored the opposition by a 12-1 count ... no fewer than 13 different Falcons have scored at least one goal this season to date ... seniors Gina Rossi and Corbie Yee currently lead the way, with eight points apiece ... the two are tied for the team lead with three goals ... sophomore Katie Stephenson has five points, on a pair of goals and an assist, while four teammates have four points apiece ... senior Kristin McDonald, junior Colleen Kordan and freshman Katelyn Turner each have two goals, while freshman Megan Amann has a team-high four assists ... redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault has started all nine matches, and has 44 saves and a goals-against average of just 0.81 ... senior Christy Zabek has played over 76 minutes of shutout ball in three relief appearances ... BGSU returned 18 of 23 letterwinners, including nine starters, from a 2007 squad that went 10-9-3 overall and 6-5-0 in MAC play ... the '07 Falcons finished fourth in the final conference standings, then advanced all the way to the MAC Tournament's championship match for the fourth time in five seasons ... the returning Falcons combined for nearly 90 percent of the team's goals scored in 2007, while the two returning goalkeepers combined to start 21 of the team's 22 matches last fall.
SHUTOUT STREAK CONTINUES
The Falcons have posted four consecutive shutouts, tying the school record ... BGSU's 2005 team also had four-straight shutouts, from Oct. 7-16 of that year ... a few more shutout-related notes ...
• The last goal surrendered by the Falcon defense came on Sept. 7 at Ohio State ... ... BGSU has not allowed a score in the span of 412:46, the second-longest such streak in program history ... the school record is 445:03, set in October of 2005.
• The Falcons have six shutouts in this season's nine games ... redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault has four complete-game shutouts, and has combined with senior Christy Zabek for the other two.
• Arsenault's four shutouts this season increases her career total to 10 ... those 10 shutouts have come in just 22 career starts ... Arsenault ranks third on that school list, trailing only Erika Flanders (17 shutouts from 1999-2002) and Ali Shingler (16 from 2001-05).
• Arsenault's personal shutout streak currently stands at 367:46, dating back to that Ohio State match ... that streak is the longest of her career and ranks fourth on the BGSU list ... Zabek holds that record, with a scoreless streak of 544:48 to begin her Falcon career (Sept. 16, 2005 to Oct. 20, 2006).
... GOES FROM ZERO TO ONE IN 19 SECONDS
Senior Corbie Yee scored just 19 seconds into the Falcons' Sunday (Sept. 21) match at Xavier ... that marked the earliest goal in a game in program history ... prior to Sunday, the Falcons had twice scored goals 22 seconds into a half ... both Jamie Eshleman (Oct. 17, 1997 vs. Kent State) and Kristy Coppes (Oct. 11, 2002 at Central Michigan) had achieved that feat, with both goals coming in the second half ... the earliest first-half goal in program history had been exactly one minute into the match, by Jill Conover at Northern Illinois (Sept. 18, 1999).
THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
Northern Illinois is 4-1-3 on the season ... the Huskies split last weekend's matches, with a 1-0 win over SE Missouri State and a 3-1 loss at Creighton ... the loss snapped a school-record 14-match unbeaten streak ... despite the setback, NIU's eight-game start is the best in school history ... Thea Johnson leads the team with nine points, on three goals and three assists ... YEE MOVES UP BGSU SCORING LISTS
Senior Corbie Yee now has 16 career goals ... she has tied Britt Anderson (2002-05) for sixth place on the BGSU career list ... with an assist in Friday's (Sept. 19) win over Detroit, Yee now has 11 career helpers, tying her for 10th on that chart ... her total of 43 career points at BGSU ranks her eighth in program history.
16 GOALS, EIGHT WINNERS
Exactly half of Corbie Yee's 16 career goals have been game-winning scores ... Yee is now tied for second on that BGSU career chart, with Samantha Meister (8 GWG from 2002-05) ... Kristy Coppes, the school's career scoring leader, is also the BG record-holder in GWG ... Coppes had 14 GWG among her 52 total goals in her career.
STREAKY
Senior Corbie Yee currently has a career-long four-game point-scoring streak ... Yee has scored all eight of her points this season in those four games, all wins ... sophomore Katie Stephenson has a three-game scoring streak, the longest of her career ... with two goals and an assist, Stephenson has five points during that time, matching her point total for all of last season.
SCORING SURGE
Prior to the IPFW game (Sept. 5), the Falcons had not scored more than three goals in a match since the 2005 season ... over the last six games, though, BGSU has averaged 3.50 goals.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Falcons' win over Detroit improved the team's all-time record at Cochrane Field to 52-51-8 ... BGSU is over .500 in home games for the first time since October of 1999 (since the Falcons were 12-11-1 after a loss to Eastern Michigan).
A FEW FINAL FALCON NOTES
BGSU is now 2-1-2 in road games this season to date ... the Falcons have scored nine first-half goals in nine games, matching the total for all of last year (22 games) ... freshman Leah Johnson scored her first collegiate goal in Friday's win over Detroit ... Johnson became the 13th different Falcon player to score a goal this year ... classmate Katelyn Turner scored her second goal of the season in that UDM game ... the goal proved to be her first career game-winning goal ... she has scored her two goals in just five games ... that UDM game concluded a perfect 3-0-0 homestand for the Falcons ... in those three games, BGSU scored a total of 14 goals, and 'keepers Alexa Arsenault and Christy Zabek never had to fish a ball out of their own net ... the Falcons lead the MAC in scoring, averaging 2.44 goals per game ... at the other end of the field, BGSU's total of six shutouts also leads the conference ... the Falcons' road swing continues next weekend, with trips to Ohio (Oct. 3) and Akron (Oct. 5) ...
