Falcons Go 12-3 at Spartan Invitational

The Bowling Green State University tennis team had another successful day of action in the early stages of the 2008-09 season. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean went a combined 12-3 in Saturday action (Sept. 27) at the Spartan Invitational, hosted by Michigan State University.
No team scores are kept at the two-day, eight-team tournament. Over the two days, each school will face three opponents in singles action and three in doubles play.
On Saturday, the Falcons began by going 2-1 in doubles action against the host Spartans. The doubles teams of sophomore Christine Chiricosta and senior Kelsey Jakupcin and juniors Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel picked up wins for the Brown and Orange over the Green and White.
From there, the Falcons moved on to singles play. BGSU went 5-1 against Cleveland State, and the Falcons also won five of six matches vs. Detroit. Three BG competitors - Babina, Chiricosta and seniors Libby Harrison and Stefanie Menoff - each went 2-0 in singles play on the day.
Through Saturday action, Chiricosta has a stellar 8-1 record this season to date, including a perfect 5-0 singles mark. Babina and Kintzel are both 4-1 in singles and 6-3 overall this year to date, while both Harrison and Menoff have 4-1 singles marks and 5-4 overall records in 2008-09.
The Falcons will conclude the Spartan Invitational on Sunday (Sept. 28). BGSU is scheduled to compete against Marshall and Akron in doubles, before closing the weekend with singles competition vs. arch-rival Toledo.
