PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania - Assistant coach Mark Hardaway and the Bowling Green State University volleyball team opened their weekend in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with two five set matches defeating the Penn Quakers, 3-2 (25-18, 27-25, 26-28, 22-25, 15-8), winning their first five set match of the season and the falling to the Fairfield Stags, 3-2 (25-13, 15-25, 21-25, 25-13, 12-15).
Against the Quakers
The Falcons opened up strong against the Quakers taking the first two sets out hitting Penn in both sets. In the first set the Falcons terminated 15 kills with a .407 hitting percentage compared to the Quakers 12 kills hitting a .308. Once again in the set second the Falcons out did the Quakers recording a match high 19 kills posting a .310 hitting percentage compared to Penn' 17 kills.
The Orange and Brown had three hitters post double-digit kill performances. Corey Domek led the Falcons with 16 kills hitting a .312. Falcon middle-hitters Kendra Halm and Shari Luther also both posted big numbers with 15 kills each. Halm recorded a .400 hitting percentage with only three errors against Penn. Sam Fish dished out 48 assists and six kills with only one error for a .385 hitting percentage. For the fourth straight match Chelsey Meek led the defense with 14 digs.
Against the Stags
After a non-conference five set match against Penn, the Falcons headed to the Temple Invitational to take on the Fairfield Stags, where the Falcons fell 3-2, to the Stags.
The Falcons came out firing in the first set as Domek put down the first kill of the match to side-out. The Falcons strung together back-to-back three point runs to take an early five point lead, 10-5. The Orange and Brown followed up later with a four point run to extend their lead to seven over the Stags, 15-8. The Falcons took their biggest lead of the set, 21-11 after Mohr terminated play, which turned into a four point run. The Falcons finished the first set the same way they started it with a kill from Domek ending the set, 25-13. The Falcons dominated the first set with 11 kills hitting a .286 and four blocks while holding the Stags to seven kills hitting a -.079.
The Stags came back in set two taking an early 9-3 lead over the Falcons. After both teams going back and forth the Stags strung together two consecutive four point runs to take a 22-10 lead. The Falcons fought back as Kaitlin Jackson ended the Stags run with a kill, which led to a four point run but it wasn't enough to over come Fairfield as BG fell, 15-25.
Fairfield kept the momentum going in the third set putting together two three-point runs followed by a four-point run to take an early, 11-6 lead over the Falcons. BG continued to fight back, keeping the set close and eventually tied the set up 20-20. Despite the Falcons' come back the Stags took the third set, 25-21.
Down two sets to one the Falcons jumped out to an early 9-6 lead over the Stags, but they came right back with three straight points to tie the set up 9-9. The Falcons answered right back with a five-point run to recapture the lead, 15-10. BG closed the door on the Stags as they put together the longest run of the nine with eight straight points all started by a kill from Mohr. The Falcons took the fourth set, 25-13 to even up the match 2-2, forcing a fifth and final set. BG out hit Fairfield in the fourth set 12 kills to nine posting a .333 hitting percentage compared to the Stags' 0.28.
As everything came down to the fifth set for the Falcons for the second match of the day, they took the first three points of the set. However the Stags came right back with a four-point run but a kill from Halm stopped them and tied the game up, 6-6. The Stags recaptured the lead after scoring points in a row and held the lead the rest of the set defeating the Falcons, 15-12.
Despite the Falcons' loss to the Stags once again BG had three players in double-digits on offense. Mohr led the Falcons with 13 kills, with Halm terminating 11 and Domek recording 10 kills. Fish once again ran the offense picking up 40 assists while Meek led the defense with 27 digs.
The Falcons will continue their stay in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as they wrap-up the Temple Invitational against host Temple tomorrow (Sept. 6) at 12:00 p.m. and Army at 3:00 p.m.
