GREENVILLE, S.C. (BGSUFalcons.com) - The College of Charleston scored on the game's first shot, and held off the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team in a 2-0 win over the Falcons Sunday morning/afternoon (Sept. 7). The game, part of second-day action at the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational, was held at Stone Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 2-2 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 0-3 on the year.
The Falcons outshot Charleston, 12-9, for the game, although the Cougars had the advantage in shots on goal. Seven of Charleston's nine shots were on target, to four for the Brown and Orange.
Senior Paul Shoemaker made five saves in the match, while the Cougars' Brendan Smith had four stops at the other end of the pitch.
Shoemaker and Jacob Lawrence each were named to the Diadora/Spinx Furman Invitational All-Tournament Team.
Matt Morris got the scoring started, heading home a Jake Helmig cross from point-blank range with 10:27 elapsed.
The Falcons, though, reeled off the next five shot attempts, including one by sophomore Dusko Topolic from approximately 30 yards out, that rang off the crossbar. Also among those five shots were two by Tyler Deal that both were on target, but were saved by Smith. The Falcons had four corner kicks to the Cougars' zero during that span.
The Cougars had a pair of shots on goal in the final five minutes of the half, but Shoemaker stopped both Zach Prince and Sean de Silva.
The Falcons' kept up the pressure in the early stages of the second half. BGSU had the first three shot attempts of the period, including a pair by Cameron Hepple, seeing his first action of the regular season.
The match remained 1-0 until just 12:58 remained. Charleston's David Munson gave his team a two-goal lead with a 13-yard shot from the left side of the box. Prince picked up the lone assist on the play.
The Falcons were credited with three more shots, including two by Ahmad Smith, in the final 11-plus minutes of the match, but could not cut into the deficit.
The game featured a total of just 13 fouls, with the Falcons whistled for only four.
"Charleston came out and played quite well today," said BGSU head coach Fred Thompson. "Both teams wanted to finish the weekend on a high note, and it was a fairly even game. They got an early goal on their first opportunity of the game. There was a little mismarking in the middle, a slight mental lapse on our part, but it was a decent goal for them.
"After that, the game really balanced out, and we had a couple great opportunities. Dusko hit a fantastic strike that beat the 'keeper handily, but hit the bar and bounced down and out.
"Midway through the second half, we had another great chance within their six-yard box. Cameron served a ball from right to left, that was headed back toward the middle for Thomas (McLean) to finish, but their 'keeper came out of nowhere.
"Paul Shoemaker was exceptional again today, and Jacob Lawrence played quite well. Both are very deserving of their all-tournament accolades. In fact, we got a number of good performances today.
"We were a little bit unlucky not to score. I get the feeling that, once we stick one in, the floodgates will open. So, we will go back to the drawing board, and work toward getting ready for next weekend."
BGSU will once again take to the road next weekend, heading to Conway, Ark., for the Central Arkansas Tournament. BGSU will face Centenary on Friday (Sept. 12) before meeting host UCA the following afternoon (Sept. 13).
