Falcons Take On Redbirds in the Land of Lincoln

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head coach Kerrie Beach and the Falcons will pack their bags for their second straight road meet in the "Land of Lincoln" as they take on Illinois State. The Falcons will match-up against the Redbirds on Friday (Jan. 23) at 8:00 p.m. ET.

The Falcons will pack their bags for their second consecutive road meet in the "Land of Lincoln" against Illinois State ... the Redbirds are currently 0-5 after finishing fourth at Michigan's State Flip for a Cure (also competing against Iowa and West Virginia) ... the Falcons own their all-time series 10-6 over the Redbirds and are 1-1 against them on the road in Normal, Illinois ... the Orange and Brown are on a four meet winning streak against the Redbirds ... the last meeting between the two teams was in 2006 as the Falcons recorded a victory at home against the Redbirds, 189.100-187.500.
KINZER NAMED MAC SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK
Freshman gymnast, Andrea Kinzer was named the Mid-American Conference Specialist of the Week after recording her first collegiate event win and leading the Falcons to a victory in their home opener against Ball State (Jan. 18). Kinzer won her first collegiate event on floor along with third place finish on vault; her second consecutive top-three finish in as many weeks. She started off the floor exercise for the Falcons, setting the bar high for the squad as she stuck every combination for a career high 9.750 and her first collegiate event win. Her strong performance led the Falcons to team score of 47.600 nearly two-tenths higher than last weekend's team score against Northern Illinois. Earlier in the meet she landed her second consecutive top-three finish on vault with a 9.675 for a third place finish.
FALCONS SOAR PAST CARDINALS IN THE BATTLE OF THE BIRDS
The Falcons opened the 2009 home season in their new nest and home in Anderson Arena as they soared past the Ball State Cardinals (189.575-187.325), Jan. 18 in front of nearly 250 fans. The gymnastics squad picked up their first overall and Mid-American Conference victory of the season and continued their winning streak over the Cardinals as they picked up their third straight win in as many seasons. The Orange and Brown also continued their success over the Cardinals in season home openers as they have opened their home schedule five times including this season's home opener, defeating them in every home opener.
GUY VAULTS TO HER SECOND CONSECUTIVE WIN
Junior Breanne Guy had another strong performance against Ball State as she finished first on the vault and in the all-around. Guy won her second consecutive vault on the season with a score of 9.800 (Jan. 18). After opening the 2009 season against NIU (Jan. 12) with a first place finish on the vault sticking a 9.875 and tying her career high and the fourth best vault score in program history.
BREWER AND KINZER TOP BARS AND FLOOR
Red-shirt sophomore Amber Brewer and freshman Andrea Kinzer both recorded their first collegiate event win as the Falcons defeated the Cardinals (189.575-187.325) in their home opener on Jan. 18. Brewer recorded her first collegiate event win swinging her way to a season and career high 9.750 on the uneven bars while Kinzer picked up her first collegiate win after a strong performance sticking every combination on floor exercise for a career high 9.750.
FALCONS BUILD A NEW NEST FOR 2009
The Falcon gymnasts have built a new nest in Anderson Arena for all home competitions starting in 2009. This season will be the first time that all home gymnastics meets will be held in Anderson Arena. The Falcons kicked off their home schedule with a 189.575-187.325 win over Ball State (Jan. 18). The Falcons will return home to host their next opponent, MAC foe Kent State on Feb. 7 at 4:00 p.m. (Admission Prices for all home meets are $5 for Adults and $3 for Youth/Seniors/Military.)
GUY OPENS SEASON WITH A BANG
Junior Breanne Guy opened the 2009 season against NIU with a bang recording a career high 38.975 in the all-around, the fourth best all-around score in BG history. Guy finished in the top-two of three events, including a first place finish on vault as she stuck a 9.875 tying her career high and the fourth best vault score in program history.
FILLMORE BEAMS HER WAY TO FIRST
Kasey Fillmore, a red-shirt freshman, finally got her debut as a Falcon in the season opener against Northern Illinois where she recorded her first collegiate win with a first place finish on the balance beam. After being sidelined due to injury last season Fillmore came out strong in her first collegiate meet scoring a 9.750 on beam and 9.575 on bars.
FALCONS FALL TO HUSKIES IN SEASON OPENER
Despite the Falcons' strongest season opener showing since 2004 head coach Kerrie Beach and the Falcons fell to the Northern Illinois Huskies, 193.450-191.875 in their 2009 season opener (Jan. 11). The Falcons recorded six individual top three finishes, including two number one performances from junior Breanne Guy on the vault tying her career high 9.875 and from red-shirt freshman Kasey Fillmore on the balance beam with a 9.750.
FALCONS AGAINST THE MAC
The Falcons own four of the six all-time series against their MAC opponents. The Falcons lead Ball State (21-12), Eastern Michigan (18-17), Northern Illinois (9-5) and Western Michigan (23-7-1). The only MAC teams to lead the Orange and Brown in their all-time series are Central Michigan (13-21) and Kent State (11-38-1).
