Falcons Off to Solid Start at Queen City Invite
October 02, 2009 | Women's Tennis
The Bowling Green State University tennis team got off to a solid start Friday (Oct. 2) at the Queen City Invitational. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean went a combined 13-3 in singles action and 2-2 in doubles play on the first day of the three-day tourney.
No team scores are kept at the tourney, which is being hosted by the University of Cincinnati at the Queen City Racquet Club. But, individual champions will be crowned in each of four singles and two doubles flights.
No fewer than five of BGSU's eight competitors went 2-0 in singles play on Friday. That group included junior Christine Chiricosta and senior Samantha Kintzel at the A flight, freshman Maddy Eccleston at the B flight, sophomore Jessica Easdale at flight C and freshman Katie Grubb at the D flight.
In fact, every member of Dean's team won in the first round of singles play. Senior Katia Babina captured her first-round match at flight B before losing in the second round, while freshman Jade Johnson and junior Mary-Catherine Beck won their opening-round matches at flights C and D, respectively, before losing in the second round.
In doubles, each of the Falcons' four teams played one match on Friday. The Babina/Kintzel duo downed their Xavier foes by an 8-1 outcome, while the Chiricosta/Eccleston team did not lose a game in a victory over a tandem from Bradley. Each of those BGSU teams is competing at the A flight.
Three Falcons -- Chiricosta, Eccleston and Kintzel -- each were a perfect 3-0 in Friday action, with a pair of singles wins and one doubles victory apiece.
Participating schools in the Queen City Invitational include BGSU, UC, Ball State, Bradley, Dayton, Toledo, West Virginia and Xavier.
The tourney continues with action on Saturday (Oct. 3), beginning at 9:00 a.m. BGSU's complete day-one results are below.
