BGSU heads to Louisville to face UL, Morehead State
The Bowling Green State University tennis team begins the 2010 portion of the schedule this weekend, heading to Kentucky for a pair of matches. The Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will face the University of Louisville on Saturday (Jan. 16) and Morehead State University on Sunday (Jan. 17).
Both matches will be held at the U of L's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, with Saturday's Louisville match starting at 2:00 p.m. locally, and Sunday's MSU match beginning at 10:00 a.m.
"We are excited about getting back into action," said Dean. "Louisville and Morehead State are very tough teams to start off our dual-match season. Half of our starters are new, so this weekend's matches will give us a good idea of where we stand right now."
The Falcons are coming off a 2008-09 season in which BGSU went 12-7 overall and finished with a 5-3 Mid-American Conference dual-match mark. BG finished fourth in the conference regular-season standings, but lost three seniors off that squad.
Four letterwinners returned from that team, including senior co-captains Katia Babina and Samantha Kintzel. Junior Christine Chiricosta also returns after earning All-MAC Second-Team honors for the second time in as many years at BGSU. Sophomore Jessica Easdale rounds out the returnees.
The four first-year Falcons include junior Mary-Catherine Beck, a transfer from Mount Union College, as well as a trio of freshmen in Maddy Eccleston, Katie Grubb and Jade Johnson.
Seven of the eight players posted winning singles records in fall action, led by Easdale and Johnson, who each went 13-6. Chiricosta had a 12-5 singles mark, while Eccleston posted a 12-6 record in her first semester as a collegian.
In doubles play, Dean and assistants Cindy Yonker and Libby Harrison utilized no fewer than 13 different combinations in the team's three fall tournaments.
"All of our doubles combinations are new, so this weekend will provide some tough tests as we get the dual-match schedule underway," said Dean. "Christine will take over the number-one spot in singles on a permanent basis, but with only three returnees to the singles lineup, we will be relying on some newcomers there as well."
According to available records, the Falcons have never met Louisville in dual-match play. BGSU did travel to Louisville to participate in the Louisville Invitational, a non-scored fall event, early in the 2001-02 season.
The Falcons lead Morehead State, 2-1, in the all-time series, but the teams have not met since the 1986-87 season. That year, MSU posted a 5-4 win in Bowling Green. The Falcons picked up 6-3 wins in both the 1978-79 and 1985-86 campaigns, with the sites of those matches unknown.
Following this weekend's action, the Falcons will head to the Queen City for a pair of duals next weekend. BGSU will take on Cincinnati on Saturday, Jan. 23, before facing Xavier the following day. BG then embarks upon a three-match homestand at the Perrysburg Tennis Center, the indoor home of the Falcons. That homestand commences with a Jan. 30 match vs. IPFW.
