Falcons Face Wright State Before Beginning Three-Match Homestand

BGSU hosts Northern Illinois in a key MAC matchup Saturday
The Bowling Green State University men's soccer team, after hitting the road one final time in the regular season, will return to Northwest Ohio for a season-long three-game homestand ... the Falcons of head coach Eric Nichols will travel to Dayton to face Wright State University Wednesday night (Oct. 28) ... kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at WSU's Alumni Field ... then, the Brown and Orange will begin the homestand with a Mid-American Conference match vs. Northern Illinois University on Saturday (Oct. 31) ... kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field ... following the NIU match, BGSU will host Detroit (Nov. 4) and Florida Atlantic (Nov. 7) to end the regular season.

LAST WEEK
The Falcons lost a narrow 2-1 decision on the road against Michigan State Wednesday (Oct. 21) before battling Hartwick to a 2-2, double-overtime draw on Sunday (Oct. 25) ... in East Lansing, the Spartans scored a pair of goals two minutes apart early in the second half, then held on for the victory ... redshirt junior Ahmad Smith scored his first goal of the season in the 69th minute to cut MSU's lead in half, but the Falcons could not get the equalizer ... freshman goalkeeper Dylan Schoettley, making his second consecutive start, had eight saves, the highest total of his young collegiate career ... seniors Jacob Lawrence and Gavin Dozier assisted on Smith's goal ... on Sunday, Lawrence scored a pair of goals seven minutes apart in a wild second half ... Hartwick broke a scoreless tie in 72nd minute, but Lawrence converted a penalty kick three minutes later, then headed home a corner kick by fellow senior co-captain Hunter Van Houten with nine minutes left in regulation ... but, the Hawks were awarded a PK of their own, converting it to tie the game with 4:42 remaining in the second half ... The Falcons have scored seven goals over the last three matches, after scoring a total of nine goals in the season's first 11 games ... and, BG was without leading scorer Cameron Hepple for a game-and-a-half of that three-match span, due to injury ... senior Jacob Lawrence certainly has done his part, having scored nine points over the last three games ... Eric Nichols is in his first season at the BGSU helm ... he was hired on Feb. 17, 2009, becoming just the fifth head coach in the 45-year history of the program ... Nichols came to BGSU after spending the 2008 season as assistant coach at Davidson College ... he had a successful debut to his BGSU head-coaching career, as the Falcons defeated Marshall, 2-0, in the regular-season opener, and picked up his first MAC victory at Buffalo ... Nichols has a 2-9-3 record at the helm of the men's soccer Falcons, and is 61-31-4 in his fifth season as a collegiate head coach ... prior to his stint at Davidson, Nichols was the head men's soccer coach at Ohio Dominican for four seasons (2004-07) ... under his guidance, the Panthers recorded a 59-22-1 (.728) record, including a final ranking of fourth in 2007 ... that team advanced all the way to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Tournament ... Lemke's previous high in minutes was 61, in last month's Duquesne match (Sept. 12) ... Lemke had played a total of 228 minutes over the Falcons' first 12 games, prior to playing 167 last week.
• Including goalkeepers, a total of 20 different Falcon players have started at least one match this season to date ... senior Tyler Deal and sophomore Tanner Fink are the only two Falcons to have started all 14 games.
• The Falcons scored three goals in last week's two games ... that figure is not necessarily mind-boggling, but it is an impressive total when considering the opposition ... Michigan State entered last Wednesday's match with a team goals-against average of just 0.58, leading the Big Ten Conference by over 0.20 ... MSU had posted 17 shutouts in the previous 24 games, dating to last season.
• Hartwick had entered Sunday's game having allowed only five goals in 12 matches this year, for a GAA of just 0.40 ... BGSU became the first team to score more than one goal in a game against HC since last Nov. 1, a span of 17 games for the Hawks.
• The Falcons played without Hepple, the team's leading scorer, in the Hartwick game ... Hepple had scored seven of BG's 14 total goals entering Sunday's match, and has 15 points on the year.
EVEN STEVEN
The Falcons' results last week mean that BGSU is now deadlocked with Michigan State and Hartwick in the all-time series ... BGSU and MSU each have won 16 matches (with five ties) in that series ... the Falcons and Hartwick are all even at 1-1-2 in their four meetings ... and, BG is currently tied with Wright State in that series as well ... as mentioned earlier, the Falcons and Raiders are 4-4-2 heading into Wednesday's game.
LEADERS OF THE MAC
Several Falcons are among the MAC leaders in the latest conference statistics ... in MAC games only, senior Jacob Lawrence is second in the league in goals (4), goals per game (1.00) and points per game (2.00) ... he ranks third in points (8) ... fellow senior co-captain Hunter Van Houten is tied for second in both assists (3 in MAC games) and assists per game (0.75) ... at the other end of the field, freshman Dylan Schoettley is tied for first in the MAC in saves per game (6.00 spg in MAC matches), while redshirt frosh Jeff Smoker is third (5.50 spg).
FALCONS TABBED FOR FIFTH
The Falcons were predicted to finish fifth in the MAC's preseason poll ... the poll is the result of voting by the league's seven head coaches ... Akron was predicted to win the regular-season and tournament crowns in 2009 ... Florida Atlantic and Hartwick are affiliate members of the MAC in men's soccer.
