With the win, the RedHawks improve to 6-4-1 overall and 2-1-1 in MAC action, while the Falcons drop to 4-8-1 and 0-3-1, respectively.
Sara Lund scored two of MU's four goals, with her first coming only 2:10 into the match. Brooke Livingston doubled the RedHawks' lead at the 20:23 mark, and Lund scored again with 27:23 elapsed.
Junior Alicia Almond got the Falcons on the board with 31:47 gone in the match, with senior co-captain Colleen Kordan picking up an assist. But, MU's Eva Candia would close the scoring at 71:03.
Lund opened the game's scoring after teammate Jodi Zwingelberg fed the ball into the box. Lund was able to slide and deflect the ball into the net just before redshirt junior goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault was able to get to it.
MU doubled the lead in the 21st minute, when Livingston headed home a corner kick from Kersta Carlson. Then, exactly six minutes later, Lund chipped the ball over Arsenault's head and into the net to give the RecHawks a 3-0 lead.
Almond got the Falcons on the board in the 32nd minute, with her first goal of the season. Kordan's free kick went to Almond, who ripped a shot from outside the 18-yard box. The shot sailed past MU 'keeper Krista Pace into the left corner of the net.
Candia scored the only goal of the second half, picking up a loose ball just outside the box and hitting a shot that deflected off a BG defender and into the net.
The 'Hawks held a 13-8 advantage in shot attempts, and a narrow 7-6 margin in shots on goal. Pace made five saves in her complete-match effort. For the Falcons, Arsenault played the first half, making two saves, while freshman Laura Arnold played the final 45 minutes and had one save.
"Anyone who is involved in a sport -- as a player, a coach or a fan -- knows that the game can be extremely cruel at times," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "This is another example where the team played well at times, but didn't get what they deserve. A mixture of awful luck and bad individual mistakes contributed to our downfall.
"On a high note, it was an excellent goal scored by Alicia Almond. It was definitely the goal of the day, and it was the goal of the season for us so far.
"It is a very challenging, tough time for both players and coaches, but we are determined to see our way through it and find our way to the light at the end of the tunnel. We look forward to some home games coming up, and a definite change of fortune."
The Falcons return to Northwest Ohio to begin a four-match homestand with a Friday (Oct. 9) match vs. Ohio University. Kickoff for that contest will be 4:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
