Falcons Finally Return Home, Face Ohio and Akron

The Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, after playing no fewer than six consecutive matches away from home, returns to Cochrane Field for a pair of Mid-American Conference games this weekend ... the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards begin a four-match homestand with a Friday (Oct. 9) contest vs. Ohio University ... kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Cochrane ... then, the Brown and Orange will host the University of Akron on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 11), beginning at 1:00 p.m. ... the Falcons will complete the home portion of the regular-season schedule with a pair of matches next weekend, vs. Kent State University (Oct. 16) and the University at Buffalo (Oct. 18).

ABOUT THE FALCONS
BGSU has an overall record of 4-8-1, including a mark of 0-3-1 in MAC play, entering Friday's Ohio game ... the Falcons are 3-1-0 in home games, 1-6-1 in road contests and 0-1-0 in neutral-site matches to date, and the Brown and Orange will be looking to snap a six-game winless streak ... last weekend, the Falcons suffered a 1-0 loss at Ball State Friday (Oct. 2) before falling at Miami, 4-1, Sunday afternoon (Oct. 4) ... the Falcons have scored 13 goals and allowed 21 this year to date ... BG's top-four scorers all are sophomores, while a freshman is deadlocked for fifth on the team ... sophs Megan Amann and Alyssa Zuccaro are tied for the team lead with seven points apiece ... Katelyn Turner and Leah Johnson have six and five points, respectively, this season, while freshman Keely Chandler and senior Colleen Kordan each have four ... the Falcons' 13 goals have come from nine different players ... Johnson leads the team in minutes played with 1131, while Almond has played 1076 and Bland 1050 ... in goal, redshirt junior Alexa Arsenault has started 11 matches, and has a team-high 52 saves and a goals-against average of 1.48 ... redshirt freshman Becca Ison has a GAA of 1.13, in nearly 159 minutes of work ... true freshman Laura Arnold has played 180 minutes, and has a 2.50 GAA ... head coach Andy Richards is in his 10th season ... he welcomed back 18 letterwinners, including nine starters, from last year's team ... the 2008 Falcons finished 12-6-4 overall and 6-3-2 in the MAC.
FALCON COACH ANDY RICHARDS
BGSU head coach Andy Richards, in his 10th season at the helm, is one of the most successful mentors in MAC women's soccer history ... he has guided the Falcons to an overall record of 97-92-20, and a record of 52-45-10 in MAC regular-season play ... BGSU is 10-5-5 in MAC Tournament matches during his tenure, and no coach has as many trips to the league tourney title game as Richards (five) ... two of those appearances – in 2004 and 2005 – resulted in MAC Tournament titles and trips to the NCAA Championships ... Richards and the Falcons also won the '05 regular-season crown ... BGSU reached an agreement with Richards on a two-year contract extension in May of 2008 ... his contract now runs through June 30, 2011 ... Richards had inked a three-year contract in February of 2006, marking the first time in school history that a soccer coach had received a multi-year contract.

• 46-1-1 in the last 48 games when scoring first (16-0-0 since the start of last season); and

THE OPPONENTS / THE SERIES
Ohio will enter Friday's BGSU match with an overall record of 5-5-1, and the Bobcats are 2-1-1 in MAC action ... the 'Cats have matched the overall winning total for all of last season ... Ohio has won two consecutive games, and the 'Cats are unbeaten over the last three matches ... last weekend, Ohio went on the road and picked up a pair of wins, at Northern Illinois (2-0; Oct. 2) and Western Michigan (2-1; Oct. 4) ... the team's first MAC weekend included a 4-0 loss vs. Central Michigan (Sept. 25) and a scoreless tie against Eastern Michigan (Sept. 27) ... individually, Kelsey Pichel has a team-high seven points, including five assists ... Erin Schwenke is second on the Bobcats with six points ... she leads the team in goals, with three ... in goal, Jess MacLean has seen the bulk of the time ... she has two shutouts, 35 saves and a GAA of 1.71 ... The Falcons trail Ohio, 8-2-2, in the all-time series between the teams, but BGSU is unbeaten in the teams' last two meetings ... both of those games have required double overtime ... last fall, the Falcons and Bobcats battled to a scoreless tie in Athens, with Alexa Arsenault making two saves to earn the shutout (Oct. 3, 2008) ... in the last meeting in Bowling Green, Corbie Yee's 'Golden Goal' gave the Brown and Orange a 1-0 win (Oct. 26, 2007) ... The Falcons lead Akron, 7-1-0, in that series, and BGSU has won each of the last two meetings ... the Brown and Orange picked up a 2-0 win at UA's Lee Jackson Field last year (Oct. 5, 2008) ... Arsenault picked up the shutout, while Alicia Almond had one of the Falcons' two late goals ... BGSU has a 4-0-0 home record vs. the Zips, including a 1-0 win two years ago (Oct. 28, 2007) ... Jackie Tamerlano picked up one of the assists on Yee's goal in that match ... FALCON NOTES
• BGSU had a total of 12 corner kicks Friday (Oct. 2) at Ball State, the team's highest total in nearly five years ... the Falcons last had 12 CKs on Oct. 24, 2004, in a 2-2 double-overtime tie vs. Western Michigan at Cochrane Field.
• The last time BG had had 12 or more corner kicks in a match decided in regulation was five years and a day prior to the BSU contest ... the Falcons had 13 corners in a 5-1 win at Cleveland State on Oct. 1, 2004.
• At Ball State, the Falcons had nine corners in the first half alone, including seven in the first 20:23 of the period.
• Last weekend's losses ended a pair of series unbeaten streaks for the Falcons ... the loss at Ball State snapped a two-game unbeaten string for BG vs. the Cardinals ... the Falcons had taken last year's meeting, 1-0, at Cochrane Field, and the teams had battled to a scoreless tie in Muncie in the semifinal round of the 2007 MAC Tournament (before BG advanced to the championship via penalty kicks).
• Sunday's (Oct. 4) loss to Miami snapped a seven-game series winning streak for the Falcons ... after Miami had won the first eight meetings in the series, from 1997 through 2002, BGSU had won each matchup since 2003, including a 2005 MAC Tournament semifinal match ... in the Falcons' last six wins, BG had outscored Miami by a 14-1 count.
• Miami's four goals in Sunday's match represented the highest total allowed by the Falcons in a MAC game in over four years, since a 4-0 loss at Western Michigan on Sept. 25, 2005.
• The Falcons' 0-3-1 MAC start is the team's worst since the 2004 team also went 0-3-1 in the first four conference matches ... the '04 Falcons went on to earn a berth in the MAC Tournament, then won three more games to capture the league tourney title and advance to the NCAA Championships for the first time in program history.
• Ten of the Falcons' 13 goals this season have been scored by freshmen or sophomores.
