Keely Chandler earned MAC All-Freshman Team honors
Bowling Green State University senior Samantha Bland has been named to the 2009 All-Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Team, earning second-team honors. The team was announced Thursday evening (Nov. 5) at the MAC Tournament banquet.
Additionally, first-year Falcon Keely Chandler has been named to the MAC's All-Freshman team for 2009. The All-MAC and all-freshman teams are the results of voting by the league's 12 head coaches.
Bland, a native of Hilliard, Ohio (Darby H.S.), earns all-conference honors for the first time in her Falcon career. A 2009 co-captain, she was one of four Falcons to start all 20 games this season. She played 1720 minutes this season, the third-highest total on the team, and helped the Falcon defense post a total of five shutouts.
Bland finished her career having played in 80 total games, making 77 starts. She started the final 75 matches of her Falcon tenure. Bland's games-played total ties her for 12th in school history, and her games-started total deadlocks her for sixth on the BGSU list. Her streak of consecutive matches started is the third longest in school annals.
Bland has won or shared the BGSU defensive MVP award in her first three seasons (this year's award will be announced in the spring), and had a total of eight career points on three goals and two assists. She helped the Falcons record a total of 36 shutouts in her four years.
Chandler, a native of Rochester, Mich. (Adams H.S.), played in all 20 matches in her initial season in Northwest Ohio, making 10 starts. She drew a starting assignment in seven MAC matches, including in six of the last seven regular-season contests.
Chandler tied for fourth on the team in scoring, with six points. She had three goals to deadlock for the BG lead in that category. Chandler scored those three goals on a total of six shot attempts, for a team-leading 50.0 percent efficiency rating.
Chandler's first two career goals came in the Falcons' 2-0 home win over Youngstown State on Sept. 13. She also scored the winning goal in another BG victory at Cochrane Field, a 1-0 triumph vs. Buffalo on Oct. 18.
Central Michigan, after winning the MAC's regular-season championship, took three of the four league specialty awards. Shay Mannino was named the MAC Defensive Player of the Year, while teammate Bailey Brandon was voted the league's freshman of the year. CMU's Tom Anagnost won MAC Coach-of-the-Year honors. Eastern Michigan's Ashley Rodrigues was chosen as the MAC Offensive Player of the Year.
