Swimmers Dive Back into Competition at the Calvin Winter Invitational

The BGSU women's swim team will be one of eleven schools competing at this invitational. The Orange and Brown will be squaring off against Olivet College, Valparaiso University, Kalamazoo College, Grand Valley State University, Alma College, Northern Michigan University, Michigan State University, Hillsdale College, Denison (divers only) and Trinity (divers only).
Scouting the Competition
The Olivet Comets (0-4) will be looking for their first competitive win of the 2009-10 season at the Calvin Winter Invitational. The Comets have been unsuccessful against Hope, Hillsdale, Ohio Northern and Kalamazoo. They are members of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) and are coached by Jake Taber.
The Valparaiso Knights (0-6) will also be looking for their first win of the season. The Knights have come up short against Wright State, Cleveland State, Niagara, Saint Bonaventure, Green Bay and Milwaukee. The Knights compete in the Horizon League and are coached by Howard Hunte.
The Kalamazoo Hornets enter the invitational with a 3-0 record. The Hornets have found success against Saint Mary's, Albion and Olivet. They compete in the MIAA and are coached by Kathy Milliken.
The Grand Valley State Lakers (3-1) kicked off the 2009-10 season will a three-meet winning streak. The Lakers out swam Calvin, Hillsdale and Lewis, but lost their winning streak with a loss to Michigan State. Two weeks ago, GVS took second place out of three at the Doug Coers Invitational at Ball State. The Lakers compete in the Great Lakes Athletic Collegiate Conference (GLACC) and are coached by Andy Boyce.
The Alma Scots (0-3) will be looking to add their first win of the season at the Calvin Winter Invitational. On the women's side, the Scots have been defeated by Hope, Findlay and Hillsdale. The Scots compete in the MIAA and are coached by Chris Hamstra.
The Northern Michigan Wildcats will come to the Calvin Winter Invitational with two losses. The Wildcats have fallen to Hillsdale and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. NMU competes at the Division II level and is a member of the GLACC. They are coached by Bob Laughna.
The Mighigan State Spartans (2-2) enter the Calvin Winter Invitational with an even record. The Spartans have posted wins against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Grand Valley State, but came up short against Illinois and Iowa. Just recently, MSU notched a second place finish at the TYR Invitational, losing only to the meet host, Northwestern University. The Spartans compete in the Big Ten Conference and are coached by Matt Gianiodis.
The Hillsdale Chargers will also enter the invitational with a split record of 2-2. The Chargers compete in the GLACC and are coached by Kurt Kirner.
The Calvin Winter Invitational will be executed much like any individual league or NCAA championship. Competitive events will be held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, December 3, 4 and 5, respectively. Preliminary races will begin at 10 a.m. while finals are set to start at 6 p.m.
The invitational will kick of Thursday, Dec. 3, 2009 at 6 p.m. The evening's events include the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 1650-yard freestyle. No preliminaries will be held for either of these events.
Swimmers will dive right back into competition first thing Friday morning for preliminaries at 10 a.m. Events for the day include the 200-yard butterfly, the 200-yard freestyle, the 100-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard backstroke, the 400-yard individual medley, the 50-yard freestyle, the 400-yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle relay. The first relay will take place during the finals portion of the day while the latter will be swum during preliminaries.
Saturday, the final day of the invitational, will be carried out much like Saturday with preliminaries at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. The day's events consist of the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard backstroke, the 100-yard butterfly, the 200-yard breaststroke, the 100-yard freestyle, the 200-yard individual medley, the 200-yard medley relay (swum during finals) and the 400-yard freestyle relay (swum during preliminaries).
