CLEVELAND, OHIO - The Bowling Green State University baseball team has been picked third in the East Division for the 2009 season according to a vote of the Mid-American Conference coaches, the league office announced today.
Kent State was picked as the league favorite in the East and Western Michigan is the preseason favorite in the West Division. Kent State was picked by nine of the 12 league coaches to win the conference tournament this season.
Ohio was picked second in the East with the Falcons, who tied Kent State for the East Division title last season and the two programs shared the MAC regular season title by virtue of having the best conference record, picked third.
Bowling Green returns 20 letterwinners from a year ago, including every position player except outfielder Andrew Foster. Infielders Ryan Shay and Derek Spencer return after earning first-team All-MAC honors in 2008. BG led the MAC in hitting a year ago with a .321 average while they also tied for the league lead with 59 double plays by an infield that returns intact with senior Brian Hangbers and junior Logan Meisler joining Shay and Spencer.
Bowling Green begins the 2009 season Friday (Feb. 20) with a three-game weekend series at Western Carolina.
