Falcons Hit the Road for Knoxville

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcons will hit the road for their second tournament of the season at the Tennessee Classic in Knoxville, Tennessee (Feb. 27-March 1). The Falcons will take on three opponents for the first time in program history along with two ranked opponents No. 8/9 Tennessee and No.16/T-16 North Carolina. On Friday (Feb. 27) the Falcons will match-up against North Dakota State at 10:00 a.m. and No. 8/9 Tennessee at 2:30 p.m. On day two, Saturday (Feb. 28) the Falcons take on James Madison at 9:00 a.m. and Marshall at 1:00 p.m. BG will close out the tournament against No. 16/T-16 North Carolina.

THIS WEEKEND'S MATCH-UPS ON THE DIAMOND
Falcons vs. Bison • (2/27 • 10:00 a.m.)
The Falcons will kick off the Tennessee Classic against North Dakota State for the first time in program history ... the Bison are currently 7-3 overall on the season after going 2-3 at the Wildcat Invitational ... the Bison defeated Utah twice (4-2, 2-0) but fell to No. 11 Arizona three times (0-10, 2-9, 0-12).
Falcons vs. Lady Vols • (2/27 • 2:30 p.m.)
The Falcons are set to take on host No. 8/9 Tennessee in game two of the first day for the first time in program history ... the Lady Vols are currently 15-1 overall on a 13 game winning streak after winning their home opener (Feb. 24) against Liberty 11-1 in five innings ... the Lady Vols are have gone undefeated in their last two tournaments at the UCF-Early Bird Tournament and the Cathedral City Classic ... the Falcons and the Lady Vols were set to match-up in 2007 but due to poor weather the game was canceled.
Falcons vs. Dukes • (2/28 • 9:00 a.m.)
The Orange and Brown will open day two of the tournament against James Madison, their first meeting in program history ... the Dukes are currently 10-3 overall on a nine game winning streak ... the Dukes have gone undefeated in their last two tournaments at the College of Charleston Classic and the Gamecock Invitational.
Falcons vs. Thundering Herd • (2/28 • 1:00 p.m.)
BG will wrap-up day two of the tournament against an all too familiar opponent Marshall a former member of the Mid-American Conference ... the Thundering Herd are currently 7-6, after going 3-2 at the Georgia Softball Classic ... they won their first three games of the tournament defeating UNC-Greensboro (4-3), IUPUI (4-2) and Ball State (5-4) and fell to Georgia (1-9) and Tennessee State (8-9) ... the Falcons lead the Thundering Herd 18-4 in their all-time series ... BG has won 11 of the last 15 meetings, including sweeping the Thundering Herd in 2005, 2002, 2001, 1999, 1998 ... the last meeting between the two teams was in 2005 where the Falcons defeated the Thundering Herd, 5-3 on the road.
Falcons vs. Tar Heels • (3/1 • 4:15 p.m.)
The Falcons will finish their stay in Knoxville, Tennessee against No. 16/T-16 North Carolina ... the Tar Heels are currently 14-3 on a three game winning streak ... the Tar Heels defeated UNC Greensboro in a double-header (3-2, 11-3) ... the Tar Heels lead the Falcons 2-0 in their all-time series ... both of the games between the two teams were in 1998 as the Tar Heels defeated the Falcons (1-2, 7-9).
WIEMER NAMED MAC EAST PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Senior co-captain Hayley Wiemer, Sylvania, Ohio native was name Mid-American Conference East Division Pitcher of the Week (Feb. 17). Wiemer finished the Falcons' opening weekend fanning 19 batters in 20 innings of work with an ERA of 1.75 for a 2-2 record and one save. She opened the 2009 season (Feb. 13) from the circle for the Falcons shutting out North Florida (1-0) and striking out eight batters in her first complete game of the season. She picked up her second win of the day as she came in relief for the Falcons against Bradley, only giving up one hit in 4.2 innings of work. In her first two games Wiemer did not give up an earned run and only allowed six hits in 11.2 innings of work. On day two (Feb. 14) of the UCF-Early Bird Tournament she tied her career high 10 strikeouts against South Carolina, including fanning six straight batters in the third and fourth innings. Wiemer picked up her first save of the season in the Falcons, 3-2 win over University of Texas-Arlington.
FALCON BIG STICKS
The 2009 Falcons brought out their big sticks to open the season recording 28 hits, including two double-digit hit games in their opening weekend. The Falcons recorded 11 hits against Bradley, only two shy of last season's high (13) and 10 hits against University of Texas-Arlington. During the 2008 season the Falcons only recorded four double-digit hit games with `09 squad half way there in their opening weekend.
LINES THROWS FIRST CAREER WIN
Sophomore Zada Lines started her first career game from the mound for the Falcons against University of Texas-Arlington (Feb. 14) and eventually picked up her first career collegiate win, 3-2 over the Mavericks. Lines and the BG defense kept the Mavericks scoreless for six innings.
PROEHL A PRO AT THE PLATE
In her first weekend of collegiate softball freshman Rachel Proehl, proved to be a pro at the plate leading the Falcon offense with a .353 batting average going 6-for-17. Proehl recorded her first career hit in the season opener against North Florida (Feb. 13). She then came back in game two of the season against Bradley (Feb. 13) to record her first career multiple hit game going 2-for-5 with two RBIs. Proehl had her best game of the weekend as she led the BG offense going 3-for-4 against University of Texas-Arlington (Feb. 14), recording her second career multiple hit game and first career three hit game.
FALCONS HAVE A STRONG OPENING WEEKEND
The Falcons finished their 2009 opening weekend at the UCF-Early Bird Tournament with a 3-2 record, totaling 28 hits and a .239 batting average on the weekend. BG defeated North Florida (1-0), Bradley (8-6) and University of Texas-Arlington (3-2).
FALCONS SHUTOUT OSPREY AND DEFEAT THE BRAVES TO OPEN THE SEASON
Head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcons opened the 2009 season (Feb. 13) with a 1-0 shutout over University of North Florida followed by an 8-6 victory over Bradley. In their two games on opening day the Falcons totaled 16 hits, a season high 11 against Bradley and five against North Florida. Senior Hayley Wiemer recorded both of the Falcons' wins from the mound with an error free defense behind her.
