KNOXVILLE, Tennessee - After three and half hours of rain delay the Falcons finally opened the Tennessee Classic falling to North Dakota State, 4-6 and No. 8 Tennessee, 0-18 today (Feb. 27).
The Falcons versus the Bison in a Hitters Duel
Head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Falcons opened the Tennessee Classic this afternoon (Feb. 27) against the North Dakota Bison, playing each other for the first time in program history. The Bison were able to come out on top of the Falcons 6-4, in what turned out to be a hitter's duel as BG recorded eight hits while North Dakota State recorded 10.
The Falcon bats were aggressive and got started early as Karmen Coffey got the offense going with a one out single through the right side. Then with two outs senior Hayley Wiemer stepped up to the plate and put the Falcons on the board first as she crushed her first long ball of the season driving home two runs for the Falcons, 2-0.
The Bison were able to answer back scoring one run in the bottom of the first off of two hits.
The Falcons were kept silent in the top of the second inning but the Bison tied the game up 2-2 in the bottom of the second.
The Orange and Brown struck again after three straight singles to lead-off the third inning scoring two runs giving the Falcons a 4-2 lead over the Bison.
Once again the Bison were able to come back and tie the game up scoring two runs in the bottom of the third making the score 4-4.
The Falcon bats were kept fairly quiet the rest of the game as they couldn't turn their combined three hits in the remaining innings into any runs. However the Bison were able to score two more runs, one in the fourth and one in the sixth off of three hits and three Falcon errors. The Falcons ended up falling to the Bison 6-4 in game one of the Tennessee Classic.
Leading the Falcon offense against North Dakota State were Coffey and Susan Sontag each recording two hits on the game. Sontag went 2-for-3 against the Bison including one run scored. Coffey went 2-for-4 with an RBI and one run scored. Also posting a .500 batting average was Wiemer going 1-for-2 with a two-run homer, two RBIs and one run scored.
No. 8 Tennessee Downs the Falcons
The Bowling Green State University softball team fell to No. 8 Tennessee, 18-0 this evening (Feb. 27) in five innings.
Tennessee's big bats brought their power as they were able to record 20 hits on the game. However the teamwork of Melissa Bott on the mound and the Falcon defense kept the Lady Vols scoreless in the bottom of the third inning.
Offensively the Falcons recorded two hits one the game, one from Missy Bowman and one from Rachel Proehl.
Due to weather conditions and the absence of two teams Saturday and Sunday's schedule for the Tennessee Classic has changed. The Falcons are scheduled to match-up against Marshall at 9:00 a.m. and James Madison at 11:15 a.m. tomorrow (Feb. 28). BG's Sunday game against No.16 North Carolina has been canceled.
