BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - In the final night of the Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships, three Falcons were awarded medals.
Freshman Vicky Yu, who set new personal bests in the 100-yard butterfly and in the 400-yard IM last night, fought her way to her first ever gold medal at the MAC Championships in the 200-yard butterfly. Yu's gold medal time of 2:00.26 shattered the previous record time of 2:02:02, which she earned earlier this season.
In the same race, sophomore Sarah Burston swam her way to the bronze medal in 2:00.92. Burston's new time smashed her previous personal best time of 2:03.47 and leaves Burston with the second fastest 200 fly time in BGSU history. Burston also broke the record in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 54.67.
Senior Alisha Yee earned her fourth MAC medal tonight when she sprinted her way to a silver medal in the 200-yard backstroke in 1:59.18, tying with Kasey Carpenter of Miami. Yee's time also set a new BGSU record in the event. At the 2008 MAC Championships, Yee swam her way to two silver medals (in the 200-yard IM and 200-yard backstroke) and one bronze medal (100-yard backstroke).
Other outstanding individual Falcon performances came from senior Sami Jordan, junior, Meg Richardson, freshman, Amanda Rom, and sophomore, Liz Harper. Jordan placed 10th in the 200-yard backstroke (2:01.58), Richardson 10th in the 100-yard freestyle (51.20), Rom ninth in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:16.75) and Harper 14th in the 200-yard butterfly (2:06.02).
Richardson's time in the 100 freestyle set a new personal best and places her in second in BGSU's fastest time in the event. Rom also set herself a new personal best in the 200 breaststroke, smashing her previous best by seven seconds.
The diving Falcons met the three-meter competition in tonight's events. Out of the 24 competing divers, Katherine Shannon took 17th place with 182.95 points, Molly Wood in 21st with 170.00 points and Stephanie Saliga in 24th with 94.75 points.
In the final event of the night, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the BGSU squad of Richardson, Yee, Yu and Jordan took fifth with a time of 3:24.52. The 2009 squad broke yet another BGSU record in this event, shedding four seconds off the previous record that was set in 1990.
The Orange and Brown remained steady in seventh place throughout the duration of the meet. The Miami Redhawks were the victors.
