BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head coach Kerrie Beach's thoughts on the Falcons' season high team score and meet against Kent State.
192.60! We achieved our highest team score of the season this past weekend. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to overpower Kent State but it was a much better showing than our last meet at Eastern Michigan.
We changed our training regimen the week before this meet and I definitely feel it made a difference. Discipline, teamwork and pride in our program are really at the core of BGSU gymnastics right now. The consequences are big if routines are not made. As a result, the team really fought for every tenth at this meet. We still have changes to be made but I feel we now have a place to start.
Our first rotation on vault was strong. I was particularly pleased with Andrea Kinzer's stuck landing on her yurchenko layout full for a 9.775. Breanne Guy also did well with the same vault scoring 9.75.
Bars has been an area of strength for our team. Unfortunately, we had two athletes fall on this event but I expect a strong rebound at our next competition. Kasey Fillmore and Amber Brewer both did an awesome job, tying for the second highest score of the night with 9.775.
This was our best outing on balance beam yet. All six athletes stayed on the beam, highlighted by Breanne Guy's winning score of 9.825. Kasey Fillmore did a great job with a 9.75 routine and Megan Chronister also added a 9.725. Beam has potential to be a high scoring event for us but we need to continue to fight for stuck landings and maximize the potential on every skill.
While we had five solid scores on floor, we still have a great deal of work to do on this event. Our landings need to be cleaner and our routines need to really engage the crowd and judges. Kasey Fillmore was our top scorer with a 9.675.
Overall, it was an improvement. I will be looking for this team to continue to grow close, show more dedication and up the quality of gymnastics at competitions. It's a step in the right direction.
I have to thank all the Falcon fans for their support. Please come out to Anderson again this Friday at 6:00 p.m. when we take on Western Michigan! Finally, a special thanks to the set up and tear down crews for making our meets happen in Anderson Arena! Go Falcons and Roll Along!
