FULLERTON, California - The Bowling Green State University softball team fell to No. 9 Oklahoma, 8-0 in five innings to end their stay at the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, California (March 15). The first three innings were scoreless for both teams, with the Sooners only recording two hits, but in the fourth and fifth inning Oklahoma was able to combine for eight runs.
The Sooners' offense got started in the first inning as they recorded a one out single up the middle but Falcon centerfielder Lindsay Arney gunned the Sooner base runner down at second base.
In the bottom of the second inning the Sooners had their first scoring opportunity after a lead-off single up the middle and a Falcon error that put runners on first and second for Oklahoma with no outs. Hayley Wiemer and the Falcon defense battled back to get the next three batters to keep the Sooners scoreless.
In the top of the third the Falcons got their first base runner of the game as Haleigh Bielstein reached first base off of an error by Oklahoma's third basemen.
The Falcons were able to retire the Sooners one, two, three in the bottom of the third inning and took that momentum into the fourth as Wiemer got the Falcon offense started with a one out line drive double to right center, but the Falcons weren't able to push across any runs.
In the bottom of the fourth inning the Sooners broke into the scoreless game after a lead-off walk and a single put runners on first and second Oklahoma's Katie Norris hit a three run homer to left field giving the Sooners a 3-0 lead over the Falcons. The Falcons were able to get the last two outs of inning before the Sooners could score again.
In the top of the fifth Karmen Coffey sparked the BG offense with a one out line drive single down the right field line. Bielstein was then give first base on a base-on-balls putting runners in scoring position for the Falcons. With two outs Rachel Proehl kept the Falcons going as she singled to third base loading the bases. Despite a hard hit ball to the short-stop the Sooners kept the Falcons from scoring once again as they got the third out to end the inning.
The Sooners once again got their offense going in the bottom of the fifth as they were able to string together five hits which led to five Oklahoma runs as the Falcons fell to No. 9 Oklahoma, 8-0.
The Falcon offense was led by Wiemer, Coffey and Proehl each recording a hit against Oklahoma. Wiemer and Coffey each went 1-for-2 while Proehl went 1-for-3.
The Falcons will take the week off before they return to action for their first home stand of the season and the 2009 double-header home opener against Purdue on Thursday, March 26 starting at 2:00 p.m. at the Meserve Softball Field. Later that weekend the Falcons will open Mid-American Conference play as they host arch-rival Toledo in a two game series Saturday, March 28 at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday, March 29 at 1:00 p.m.
