THIS WEEK
The Bowling Green State University tennis team, riding a two-match winning streak, heads Westward this weekend ... the Falcons of head coach Penny Dean will conclude the non-conference portion of the dual-match schedule on Friday (March 20), taking on the University of Illinois at Chicago in the Windy City ... then, the Brown and Orange will open the Mid-American Conference slate with a Saturday (March 21) match at Western Michigan University ... both matches will begin at 1:00 p.m. Eastern Time, with Friday's UIC match to be held at Evergreen Racquet and Fitness, and Saturday's WMU dual to be played at Sorenson Courts.
LAST WEEK
The Falcons made quick work of visiting IUPUI in a 7-0 win at the Perrysburg Tennis Center Sunday afternoon (March 15) ... in doubles action, the Falcons won a pair of matches by 8-0 scores, and BGSU won the third-flight match by default ... in singles play, BG lost a total of only four games in 10 sets, winning the sixth flight by default ... no fewer than three Falcons - sophomore Christine Chiricosta, junior Samantha Kintzel and senior Stefanie Menoff - won their singles matches in 12-straight games.
A FEW THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE FALCONS
• BGSU is now 7-2 in dual-match play on the year ... the Falcons are a perfect 7-0 when fielding a complete six-player lineup, as BG was forced to forfeit the third doubles and sixth singles flights against both Michigan State (Feb. 21) and Detroit (Feb. 22).
• Junior Samantha Kintzel became the third member of the current squad, but only the 21st player in program history, to pick up 100 combined career wins ... Kintzel was victorious at both singles and doubles vs. IUPUI last weekend, giving her an even 100 wins ... she joins teammates Kelsey Jakupcin (132 career wins) and Stefanie Menoff (119), both seniors, on that list.
• Menoff's win in singles play in the IUPUI match was the 76th singles victory of her BGSU career ... she has moved into a tie for fourth place on the BGSU list ... Menoff needs just three more singles wins to tie the school record ... currently, that mark is shared by Deidee Bissinger (1997-2000) and Julie Weisblatt (1994-97), each of whom picked up 79 singles wins at BG.
• The win over IUPUI was the 50th in dual matches since Menoff and fellow seniors Kelsey Jakupcin and Libby Harrison arrived on campus in the fall of 2005 ... BGSU has a mark of 50-26 in dual-match play during that time.
• Harrison, Jakupcin and Menoff have a chance to become the winningest class in program history ... currently, that distinction is held by last year's senior class of Jenna Nussbaum and Andrea Volle ... Nussbaum and Volle helped the Falcons to a total of 55 dual-match wins, the most victories in a four-year span in BGSU annals.
• UIC enters Friday's match with a 4-5 record in dual matches ... under eighth-year head coach Shannon Tully, the Flames have never lost a Horizon League match, having gone 70-0 in conference play ... in fact, UIC has won 103-straight conference matches.
• This weekend's other BGSU opponent, Western Michigan, is 13-4 heading into a Friday match at Marquette ... WMU has won 40 consecutive regular-season matches over unranked opponents, and the Broncos have won 34-straight MAC regular-season battles ... currently, Western is ranked #56 in the nation by the ITA.
