BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Members of the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team recently donated their time and effort to a Habitat for Humanity project. The student-athletes helped out at a site in Toledo last Saturday (March 21).
The temperature was approximately 25 degrees and a light snow was falling when the team members reported for duty at 9:00 a.m. Rising seniors Colleen Kordan and Samantha Bland teamed up to share some of their thoughts on the day.
"Our tasks for the day were to pick up trash in the neighborhood, paint two sheds, assemble two shed doors to be hung, and build a shed. We used power tools such as a drill saw to assemble the shed doors -- that was a difficult task for most of us. The Habitat for Humanity workers also found it quite entertaining watching us try to use a drill. It was apparent that most of us do not have much experience with a hammer either, due to the fact that we had to remove quite a few bent nails from the shed that we were building.
"Despite our inexperience with tools, we finished the shed and assembled the doors well. While waiting for the paint to dry on our sheds we managed to stay warm by playing a friendly game of limbo with a piece of wood that we found on the property. Alicia Almond was the winner. We tried to avoid a similar paint war that we had while volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in 2007 but it was unavoidable. A few of the girls had fun getting paint on each other's face, hair, and clothing.
"All in all, our team enjoyed giving back to the community and helping out with a good cause. The Habitat for Humanity members were pleased that we gave them a few laughs that day and were happy that we volunteered to help. They look forward to seeing us again next year!"
Dave Belknap, Construction Manager at Maumee Valley Habitat For Humanity, echoed the sentiments about the team's volunteer work.
"It was cold and even snowed, but nothing stopped this team from getting the job done," said Belknap. "We built a shed, painted (yes, it snowed) and cleaned up trash. What a great group with a great work ethic. They got a lot done and had a good time with lots of laughs. Please come back again."
A group of BGSU women's soccer team members will visit the Toledo Children's Hospital on Thursday (March 26) to bring some smiles to the children and to give back to the community as well.
