FALCONS AND SPARTANS RESCHEDULED
Tuesday's (April 14) match-up between the Falcons and Spartans has been rescheduled for Tuesday (April 21) at 4:00 p.m. at Old College Field in East Lansing, Michigan.
SIX DEGREES OF FALCONS
As the Falcons host MAC East division, foes Akron and Ohio, the familiarity extends from the field to the dugouts as head coach Shannon Salsburg had her coaching debut with the Zips. BGSU head coach Shannon Salsburg will take on her former team for the first time on her home turf. Salsburg owns a perfect 3-0 record against her former team. Coach Salsburg was a graduate assistant coach for the Zips in 1999 and 2000. The familiar faces between the two teams don't end there as the Falcons will be facing two former high school teammates. Sophomore Missy Bowman will face former Massillon Perry high school teammate Lisa McLean, while senior Hayley Wiemer will face former St. Ursula Academy teammate, Kelly Krueger during the weekend series when the Falcons take on the Ohio Bobcats.
SONTAG CLIMBS INTO THE TOP TEN
Junior Susan Sontag climbed into the BG top 10 career home run list as she crushed her 11th career homer against Miami (April 12) now tied for 10th with former Falcon Colleen Bates. Sontag led-off for the Falcons in the bottom of the sixth inning blasting a long ball over the left center field fence, her second homer of the season and 11th career home run.
THE "WEST" SIDE OF THE FIELD
A compass normally points North but for Falcon rookie Melissa West her compass points to the "West", whether she is in on the field or at the plate she ends up on the "West" side of the field (third base). West is not only the Falcon's third baseman but also leads the team, is second in the MAC and ranks sixth in the nation averaging 0.20 triples per game and eighth in the nation with five triples on the season. Only 29 games into her collegiate career West has already climbed up the Falcon record books tied for fourth for triples in a season and is only two triples shy of making into the top-15 for career triples in program history.
"FRESH" BATS
Freshman Rachel Proehl and Melissa West have brought "fresh" bats to the Falcon line-up this season. The rookies have recorded a combined effort of 44 hits on the season, nearly one-third of the Falcon offense. Proehl and West lead the Falcons with 24 hits each.
SALSBURG AGAINST THE MAC
In two seasons at the helm of the Falcons head coach Shannon Salsburg leads seven of the 11 series against Mid-American Conference opponents, is tied with one and only trails- in three. Salsburg and the Falcons lead Akron (3-0), Ball State (5-2), Buffalo (2-0), Miami (4-3), Northern Illinois (4-3), Toledo (6-0) and Western Michigan (4-3) and are tied with Central Michigan (2-2). The three teams to lead the Salsburg and the Falcons are Eastern Michigan (2-4), Kent State (1-3) and Ohio (3-4).
FALCONS AGAINST THE MAC
The Falcons have dominated their MAC East division foes as they own all but one all-time series record. The Falcons lead Akron (41-20-1), Buffalo (14-3), Miami (50-38) and Ohio (50-36). The only team in the MAC East division to lead the Falcons is Kent State (41-49-1). In the MAC West division the Falcons lead four out of the six opponents in the all-time series. The Orange and Brown lead Ball State (47-29), Eastern Michigan (46-34), Northern Illinois (19-15) and arch-rival Toledo (56-33). The only two West teams to lead the Falcons are Central Michigan (16-63) and Western Michigan (28-42).
FALCONS ANSWER THE BAT CALL
The Falcon softball team answered the "Bat Call" as they recorded their fifth and sixth game of double-digit hits against Northern Illinois (April 4). Despite dropping both games the Falcons recorded 10 hits in game one and a season high 13 hits in game two. The Falcons out hit the Huskies 23-21, with six players recording a double-digit hit game in one of the two games.
WIEMER ADDS TO THE COUNT
Senior Hayley Wiemer continued to add to her career home run count and the BG all-time record as she crushed her 29th career homer and sixth of the season over the Huskies left field score board (April 4).
