KENT, OHIO - The Bowling Green State University baseball team lost a heartbreaker in the first game of a doubleheader this afternoon at Kent State as the Golden Flashes got a walk-off three-run home run from left fielder Anthony Gallas in the 10th inning for a 12-9 victory. There were 30 hits in the game in addition to the 21 runs. The loss made the Falcons 17-15 on the season and 8-5 in the Mid-American Conference while Kent, ranked 24th in the nation, improved to 27-8 and 10-3 in league play.
Neither starting pitcher, BG's Matt Malewitz or KSU's Kyle Smith, was effective as the two teams combined to score runs in eight of their first 10 at-bats and when the dust had settled the game was tied at 7-all after five innings.
The Falcons scored a run in the seventh on a pinch-hit RBI single up the middle by freshman Jon Berti and Kent State came back to score twice in the bottom half of the inning on a triple and passed ball.
Bowling Green junior T.J. Blanton hit his fifth home run of the season to lead off the eighth inning to tied the game at 9-all.
Neither team threatened in the ninth and BG got runners on second and third in the 10th with two outs before a strike out ended the threat.
In the 10th for the Golden Flashes, the first two batters reached on singles and Gallas hit a 1-0 pitch from BG sophomore Charles Wooten over the left center field fence for the game-winning hit.
Wooten, the most effective pitcher for the Falcons, suffered the loss falling to 3-2 on the season while KSU freshman lefty Andrew Chafin pitched the last three innings allowing just one hit while picking up his fourth win without a loss.
