BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Head coach Shannon Salsburg and the Bowling Green State University softball team split their twin bill against Buffalo this afternoon (April 24), winning game one 7-1 and falling 1-2 in game two. The Falcons are now 10-25 overall and 5-11 in the Mid-American Conference. BG now sits in a three way tie with Toledo and Buffalo for the number eight spot at the MAC Tournament.
Despite only taking one of two games against the Bulls, the Falcons out hit (13-9) and out scored (8-3) Buffalo on the day. In game one the Orange and Brown offense tallied 11 hits, their eighth double-digit hit game of the season, also matching their second most hits in a game. In game one eight of the nine Falcon batters recorded at least one hit with three players recording multiple hit games.
BG's 7-1 win in game one also marked a milestone for one Falcon in particular as senior Hayley Wiemer picked up her 50th career win in the circle, the fourth Falcon to accomplish such a feat, and crushed her 30th career homer the first Falcon to hit 30 long balls.
The Falcons will wrap-up the weekend and their home MAC schedule against East division rival Kent State in a two game weekend series. The Falcons and Golden Flashes will square off in game one on Saturday (April 25) at 2:00 p.m. and in game two on Senior Day, Sunday (April 26) at 1:00 p.m. The Falcons will honor senior Hayley Wiemer in a pre-game ceremony set to begin at 12:45 p.m. before Sunday's first pitch against Kent State.
The Falcon offense was firing on all cylinders in game one against Buffalo as they record 11 hits, their eight double-digit hit game of the season. Eight of the nine Falcons coming to the plate recorded at least on hit, including three players with multiple hit games. The Orange and Brown were able to score late in the game in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to roll past Buffalo, 7-1.
The Falcons were able to get make a quick inning of the Bulls in the top of first as they got the first two batters right away. The Bulls were then able to get their first base runner of the game off of a Falcon error but BG came right back getting the next batter to end the inning.
As the Falcons came to bat, freshman Melissa West led-off with a line drive single to right field, but the Falcons weren't able to score before the first inning ending.
BG was able to retire the Bulls one, two, three in the top of the second inning.
In the bottom of the second inning sophomore Haleigh Bielstein kept the Falcon offense going with a two out line drive single to left field. Then a throwing error by Buffalo's catcher allowed Bielstein to move into scoring position at second base, however one again BG wasn't able to score before the inning was over.
The Bulls were able to score first in the top of the third inning off of two hits to take a 1-0 lead over the Falcons.
In the bottom of the third inning the Falcons remained scoreless.
In the top of the fourth inning the Falcon defense was able to get the first two outs but the Bulls then reached on a Falcon error. The BG defense bounced back to get the next batter and end the inning.
The Falcon bats came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning scoring three runs off of five hits, including four straight hits. Hayley Wiemer led off the Orange and Brown with a line drive single to left field. Carly Riepenhoff then came in to pinch run for Wiemer. The Bulls were able to get the first out of the inning but Susan Sontag got the Falcons back on track with a single to right field to runners on first and second for BG. A Buffalo passed ball allowed Reipenhoff and Sontag to advance to second and third putting runners in scoring position for the Falcons. Bielstein then traded places with Sontag, recording her second hit in as many at-bats with a double to the left center gap driving home two Falcon runs, 2-1. Missy Bowman kept the Falcons rolling as she singled to center field and drove Bielstein home, extending BG's lead to two runs, 3-1. Boso followed up with the fourth straight BG hit with a single through the left side to once again put runners on first and second. The Bulls were able to get the finally two outs of the inning before the Falcons could score again.
In the top of the fifth inning the Falcons were able to get the Bulls three up, three down.
The Falcon bats continued to stay hot in the bottom of the fifth inning as Karmen Coffey led off with a single up the middle. Sophomore Zada Lines then reached on a Buffalo error as she hit a long fly ball into the left center field gap, which allowed Coffey to score and give the Falcons a 4-1 lead over the Bulls. The Bulls were able to get the next three batters to end the inning.
The Bulls were able to get some offense going in the top of the sixth as they earned a lead-off walk. With one out the Bulls were able to put runners on first and second after a single through the left side. Wiemer and the Falcon defense stepped up the get the final two outs and hold the Bulls.
In the bottom of the sixth inning the Falcon offense continued to roll along as they pushed across three more runs. Arney sparked the Falcon offense with a one out bunt single. Then with two outs Coffey kept BG alive with a line drive single to right field putting runners on first and second. Then with one swing of the bat Wiemer hit a sky high long ball over the right field wall to give the Falcons three more insurance runs, 7-1. The homer marked Wiemer's seventh of the season and the 30th of her career becoming the first Falcon in program to hit 30 home runs.
Buffalo didn't give up in the top of the seventh as they recorded a lead-off single , however Wiemer and Falcon defense were able to retire the next three batters to pick-up the win, 7-1.
From the circle Wiemer recorded her 50th career win, only the fourth Falcon in program to do so, fanning three batters in seven innings of work only giving up four hits and no earned runs.
The Falcon offense was hot with eight players tallying at least one hit with three Falcons recording multiple hit games. Leading the BG bats was Bielstein hitting a perfect 2-for-2 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored. Also recording multiple hit games were Wiemer and Coffey each going 2-for-4. Wiemer's two hits included a homer, three RBIs and one run scored.
Game two of the doubleheader was much more of a pitchers duel than game one as both teams combined for only seven hits.
Hayley Wiemer and the Falcon defense were able to sit down the Bulls one, two, three in the top of the first and second innings.
The Falcons on the other hand scored first in the bottom of the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. Melissa West led-off the game for BG with a single up the middle. Karmen Coffey then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move West into scoring position at second base. Wiemer then earned a base-on-balls to give the Falcons runners on first and second. A throwing error on a failed pick off attempt at second base by Buffalo's catcher allowed West to score and Wiemer to move to second, giving BG a 1-0 lead. The Bulls were able to end the inning before the Falcons could score again.
Despite Missy Bowman earning a one out walk in the bottom of the second inning the Falcons weren't able to score.
The Bulls offense got started in the top of third as they led off the inning with a double down the left field line. Buffalo then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to third. With one out the Bulls hits a hard ground ball to short stop as Coffey fielded the ball the runner at third took off for home plate but Coffey gunned her down at the plate keeping the Bulls from scoring. The Falcons got the third out to end the inning.
The Falcons weren't able to get anything going in the bottom of third besides Wiemer earning her second walk in as many plate appearances.
With one out in the top of the fourth the Bulls recorded double to right field, which was followed up by a walk to put runners on first and second for Buffalo. Then with two outs a passed ball allowed the Bulls' base runners to advance to second and third but the Falcons ended the inning keeping Buffalo scoreless.
Against the bottom of the fifth the Falcon offense wasn't able to get anything going besides Bowman earning a two out walk.
The top of the fifth inning for the Bulls turned out to be déjà vu of the top of the third, with the same Buffalo batters coming up to the plate. The Bulls led off the inning with a double to left center. Buffalo once again sacrificed their runner to third. Just like the third inning the next ball put in play was a grounder to short-stop for a single, however this time it went in favor of the Bulls as they were able to tie the game up 1-1. Then a Falcon throwing error allowed the Bulls to score and take a 2-1 lead. The Falcons finally ended the inning but the damage was done as the Bulls took the lead and would eventually win, 2-1.
The Falcons recorded their only other hit of the game in the bottom of the fifth as West hit a one out line drive to right center. Coffey then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move West to second, interference by Buffalo's short-stop moved West to third with two outs. The Bulls once again stayed away from Wiemer as was given first base on four straight balls. The Bulls were then able to end the inning before the Falcons could score.
Neither team were able to get anything going offensively in the sixth inning, heading into the final frame with Buffalo still ahead 2-1.
The Bulls were able to record a lead off bunt single, however Falcon catcher Katelynn Boso then gunned down the Buffalo base runner in an attempted steal. The Falcons retired the next two batters to end the inning.
The Falcons couldn't get anything going in the bottom of the seventh inning and ended up falling 2-1 to Buffalo.
Leading the Falcons in game two was West going 2-for-4 with one run scored.
