BOWLING GREEN, OHIO - The Bowling Green State University baseball team won for the seventh time in the its last nine games Saturday afternoon at Steller Field as the Falcons scored nine runs in the first three innings, to erase an early deficit, and went on to post a 15-10 win over Miami University.
BG won the first game of the series Friday, a slugfest that saw both teams combine to hit 15 home runs, by an 18-15 count. BG will look to complete the weekend sweep Sunday with the first pitch of the final game in the series scheduled for 1 p.m.
Bowling Green, which has won nine of its last 12 Mid-American Conference games, improved to 20-16 overall with the win Saturday. The Falcons moved past the RedHawks into third place in the MAC East Division with a 10-6 record in league action. Miami is now 20-18 overall and 10-7 in MAC play.
The wind was blowing out much like it did on Friday, but the pitchers did a much better job keeping the ball in the park. There were five home runs in the game, four by the Falcons, with BG junior T.J. Blanton hitting two of the round-tripper, his second career game with two home runs, both coming this season.
Much like the Friday game, the RedHawks got the early jump scoring three runs in the first inning against BG starter Matt Malewitz. Left fielder Chris Nadeau drove in one run on a ground out the catcher Eric Darlage hit his second home run of the series, and third of the season, a two-run shot to right center with two outs.
The Falcons got one back in the opening frame as shortstop Ryan Shay walked to lead off the inning and came around to score on a ground out.
Miami made it 4-1 in the top of the second as Malewitz struggled with his control giving up a single and with two outs he walked two straight batters to load the bases. The only run of the inning scored when Malewitz hit first baseman Tommy Nurre with a pitch. He got a ground out to end the RedHawk threat.
The Bowling Green offense then took center stage scoring eight runs in the second and third innings to take a lead they would never relinquish.
In the second, the Falcons pulled even as Blanton hit his first home run of the game, a two-run shot to right field with one out, and catcher Tyler Elkins, who came into the game hitting .406, singled home Shay who had doubled and stole third base.
BG then put five runs on the board in the third to take a 9-4 advantage. Third baseman Derek Spencer led off the inning by drawing a walk. Left fielder Jon Berti then singled through the right side putting runners on first and third with one out. Designated hitter Ryan Schlater then doubled to left field scoring both Spencer and Berti. Right fielder Mark Galvin then singled up the middle to bring home Schlater, and Blanton followed with his second homer in as many innings, his seventh of the season, to left field.
Miami kept chipping away at the BG lead scoring twice in the fourth on an RBI single by third baseman Jordan Petraitis and a Bowling Green throwing error. They added another marker in the fifth, on an RBI double by right fielder Adam Eaton, to close the gap to 9-7.
BG came right back to score once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to stretch their lead back to 12-7. BG got its run in the fifth on a lead off double by Galvin, who advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a wild pitch. Spencer homered to lead off the sixth, his eighth of the season, and Galvin had an RBI single later in the frame.
Miami made one last comeback try in the eighth scoring two runs on RBI singles by Nadeau and Darlage. But, the Falcons got some breathing room in the bottom half of the inning as BG first baseman Brian Hangbers took a 3-1 pitch from junior Jamaal Hollis, who had just entered the game to face Hangbers, over the right field fence. His blast gave the Falcons a 15-9 lead as Blanton and Shay came home on the home run.
BG sophomore right-hander Charles Wooten, who had relieved senior Dusty Hawk in the eighth inning getting the final out, yielded one run in the ninth but earned his third save of the season. Malewitz went the first five innings for BG to pick up his third win of the season allowing nine hits and six earned runs while striking out three. Hawk struck out four in 2.2 innings of work allowing two runs. Miami used seven pitchers with starter Tyler Melling, who gave up nine runs in 3.0 innings, suffering his first loss in five decisions.
BG had 16 hits in the game with Blanton collecting four of those, a career high. His four RBI equalled his best in a game. Galvin went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI while Elkins had two hits and two RBI and Hangbers had the three-run homer, his only hit of the game.
Eaton reached base all six times he batted in the game for the RedHawks with two doubles, three walks and one hit by pitch. He scored three runs in the game. Darlage had three hits for Miami and three RBI and Petraitis added three hits and two RBI as Miami had 13 hits.
The Falcons came into the series with Miami having lost nine of their last 10 against the RedHawks.
