Kent State Edges Out Falcons 4-3 in Extra Innings on Senior Day

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Bowling Green State University softball team never gave up this afternoon (April 26) on Senior Day as they battled back from a 3-0 deficit to force extra innings but then fell, 4-3 to Kent State in eight innings.
Before the extra inning thriller the Falcons honored their lone senior Hayley Wiemer in a pre-game ceremony. Despite the Falcons' loss the game was momentous for Wiemer as she hit her eighth homer of the season and the 31st of her career against the Golden Flashes.
Wiemer started her 30th game of the season and 95th of her career in the circle for the Falcons.
Kent State was able to get their offense going for the start of the game as they recorded a one out single to put runners on first and second. The Falcons were able to end the inning with their seventh double-play of the season as Missy Bowman snagged a line drive and doubled the runner off at first base to keep the Golden Flashes scoreless.
In the bottom of the first the Falcons weren't able to get anything going offensively.
Kent State was able to score first in the top of the second with two runs off of two hits and a Falcon error to take an early 2-0 lead.
The Orange and Brown got their offense going in the bottom of the second and as Bowman recorded a two out single up the middle. Haleigh Bielstein then hit a long fly ball to center field wall but Kent State was able to make a good play to end the inning with the score still, 2-0 in favor of the Golden Flashes.
Kent State was able to put another run up on the score board in the top of the fourth inning off of two hits and a Falcon error to take a 3-0 lead over BG.
The Falcons answered right back in the bottom of the fourth as they were also able to put runs up on the scoreboard. Karmen Coffey sparked the Falcon offense with a lead-off line drive single to right field. Wiemer then helped herself out sending a homer over the right center field fence to drive home two BG runs making it a one run ball, 3-2.
Kent State was able to record a two out single in the top of the sixth but the Falcons got the final out to end the inning before the Golden Flashes could score.
In the bottom of the sixth inning Coffey for the Falcon offense going with a one out walk. The Golden Flashes were cautious as Wiemer stepped up to the plate, throwing her three straight balls. Then with a three and one count Wiemer nearly recorded her second homer of the game as she hit a long fly but the wind pushed the ball foul as it soared over the fence. Wiemer then earned a base-on-balls to put runners on first and second for BG. Kent State was able to get the next two outs to end the inning with the score remaining 3-2 in favor of Kent State heading into the seventh inning.
In the top of the seventh the Golden Flashes were able to record a one out single but the Falcons battled back to get the next two batters to end the inning.
The Falcon offense rallied in the bottom of the seventh to score one run and tie the game up 3-3. Bielstein got the offense going with a one out walk on four straight balls. Katelynn Boso then singled through the right side of the field to put runners on first and second for BG. Lindsay Arney then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner to second and third, bringing Melissa West to the plate. With a full count, two outs and runner on second and third for BG, a Kent State wild pitch allowed Bielstein to score tying the game up 3-3. On that same pitch Boso advanced to third and West earned a base-on-balls and then took second base on smart base running. The Falcons weren't able to score again before Kent State was able to end the inning but BG stayed alive sending the game into extra innings.
In the top of the eighth with one out the Golden Flashes recorded a double to left field. Then after two Falcon errors the Golden Flashes were able to score the go ahead run, 4-3.
The Falcons never gave up in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs Zada Lines kept the Falcons alive with a double to center field but Kent State was able to get the third out to end the game. The Falcons fell just shy of Kent State, 3-2 in eight innings.
The Falcons had five different players record hits against the Golden Flashes. Leading the Orange and Brown bats were Coffey, Wiemer and Boso each going 1-for-3. Wiemer's one hit included her eighth homer of the season, two RBIs and one run scored.
The Falcons wrap-up their home schedule as take quick break from Mid-American Conference play as they host Wright State in a mid-week doubleheader on Wednesday (April 29) at 3:00 p.m. The Orange and Brown will then pack their bags and hit the road for their final weekend of play in the regular season with a double-header against Central Michigan on Friday (May 1) at 1:00 p.m. followed up with a two game weekend series against Easter Michigan on Saturday (May 2) at 2:00 p.m. and Sunday (May 3) at 1:00 p.m.
