CLEVELAND, OHIO - Bowling Green State University junior third baseman Derek Spencer has been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the league office announced today. It is the first time the Oregon, Ohio native has earned player of the week honors.
Spencer led the Falcons to a 3-1 record last week that included a 15-9 non-league win over Toledo and a 2-1 series victory over Miami.
The Clay High School product, who was a first team All-MAC selection last season, hit .706 (12-for-17) for the week with six home runs, 10 RBI and 12 runs scored. For the three-game Miami series, Spencer hit .750 (9-for-12) with five home runs, eight RBI and nine runs scored.

He had one home run and was 3-for-5 in the Toledo game before going 4-for-4 with two home runs and four runs scored in BG's 18-15 win over Miami to begin that series.
Spencer came back and his another home run and was 2-for-5 in the middle game of the Miami series, a 15-10 Falcon victory. He finished his week with a 3-for-3 day in the Miami finale with three runs scored and five RBI. Spencer hit two two-run homers in the finale and had an RBI double in the 14-12 Bowling Green loss.
Spencer is now hitting .384 for the season, ninth in the MAC, with 40 RBI, tied for seventh in the league, and 10 home runs, tied for fifth in the conference. Spencer has collected 15 hits in his last 22 at-bats over the last five Falcon games. Bowling Green, which is 20-17 overall this season and 10-7 in league play, hosts Toledo on Tuesday before making the trip to Notre Dame for a game against the Fighting Irish on Wednesday. Bowling Green hosts Ohio this weekend in a key divisional match up. Ohio is currently second in the East Division while the Falcons are fourth, one-half game behind Miami and 2.5 games behind Ohio.
