KALAMAZOO, Michigan - The Bowling Green State University softball team dropped two games to Western Michigan this afternoon (April 3) 5-2 and 7-1. The Falcons fall to 7-16 overall and 2-2 in the Mid-American Conference picking up their first losses in conference play.
This afternoon the Falcon bats weren't quite able to find their groove much like the rest of the season. The BG offense was led by freshmen Melissa West and Rachel Proehl each recording two hits on the day.
The Falcons will return to action tomorrow (April 4) afternoon in a double-header against Northern Illinois, due to Sunday weather conditions the two game series was changed to a Saturday double-header. The first pitch is schedule for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Game one of the double-header between the Falcons and the Broncos was a close battle but BG wasn't able to come out on top.
The Falcon offense got started right off the bat in the first inning as West crushed a one out triple off of the right center field wall, her third of the season, but the Falcons weren't able to score.
Hayley Wiemer and the Falcon defense were able to keep the Broncos scoreless in the bottom of the first.
The Falcons struck again in the top of the second as Susan Sontag led-off the inning with a single to right field. Missy Bowman and Karmen Coffey then both reached first base on a walk to load the bases for the Falcons with one out. The Broncos were able to get the second out of the inning but Proehl kept the Falcons alive with a single up the middle to drive home Sontag giving the Falcons an early 1-0 lead.
BG was able to make a quick inning of the Broncos as they were able to get three up, three down in the bottom of the second.
The Falcons weren't able to get anything going in the top of third despite Zada Lines reaching first as she was hit by a pitch.
The Broncos were able to score in the bottom of the third off of three hits tying the game up 1-1.
The Falcons once again were kept quiet in the top of the fourth but the Broncos were able to score two more runs off of two hits and a Falcon error to take a 3-1 over BG.
The Falcons answered right back as they were able to get one run back in the top of the fifth bringing the game with in one run, 3-2. Proehl led-off the Falcons with a slap single over the third baseman's head. West followed up with a sacrifice bunt to move Proehl into scoring position. Hayley Wiemer doubled to left center field to score Proehl, making it a one run ball game, 3-2.
The Broncos came right back to score one run in the bottom of the fifth off of a homer run to right center to once again extend their lead to two, 4-2.
The Falcon offense was kept quiet in the bottom of the sixth and seventh but the Broncos were able to push across one more run in the bottom of the sixth to win game one, 5-2.
Leading the offense in game one was Proehl going 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run score, recording her sixth multiple hit game of the season. Also recording hits for the Falcons were West, Wiemer and Sontag.
In game two of the double-header the Falcon offense was kept under wraps.
The first two innings both teams were kept scoreless. The Broncos were able to get a hit in each of the first two innings but Hayley Wiemer and the Falcon defense ended the innings before Western Michigan could score.
The Falcons remained scoreless in the third but the Broncos recorded two runs off of three hits and a BG error to take an early lead, 2-0.
The Falcons were able to get two base runners in the top of the fourth inning off of a Bronco error and a walk but were still kept scoreless.
In the bottom of the fourth the Broncos scored another run to add to their lead, 3-0.
Both teams were kept scoreless in the fifth. The BG defense fought back after three straight singles from the Broncos to end the inning before the Western Michigan could score.
The Falcon offense got going in the top of the sixth inning as Proehl led-off the inning and reach on a Bronco error. West followed up with a single to right field to put runners on first and second with no outs for the Falcons. The Broncos were able to get two outs in the next two at-bats but then walked Sontag to load the bases. Missy Bowman then singled up the middle to put the Falcons on the scoreboard, 3-1. The Broncos were able to end the inning before the Falcons could score again.
The Broncos were able to extend their lead, 7-1 scoring four runs off of two hits and an error in the bottom of the sixth.
The Falcons weren't able to get anything going in the top of the seventh and fell 7-1 in game two.
West and Bowman led the Falcon offense each recording a hit. With her hit West extended her hitting streak to six games.
