Falcons Head to Akron for MAC Championships

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - MAC CHAMPIONSHIP WEBSITE
The Bowling Green State University track and field team will travel to Akron, Ohio for the 2009 Outdoor Mid-American Conference Championships, hosted by the University of Akron. The three-day event will take place on the Lee Jackson Track and Field Complex on May 14-16.
In the sprints the Falcons will be led by Shantell Lewis and Brittani McNeal. Lewis has a season-best time of 12.36 seconds in the 100-meter and 25.26 seconds in the 200-meter dash. McNeal is the top Falcon sprinter in the 200-meters, recording a best time of 25.01 seconds at the Hillsdale Relays a few weeks ago.
In the middle distance events the Falcons will count on a handful of runners, led by Heather Conger, Saisha Gaillard, Autumn Dettmann and Barbara Powers.
Conger has a best time of 2:16.84 in the 800-meters and won the event at the Toledo Invitational with a time of 2:17.01. Gaillard is not far off Conger's pace, establishing a season-best 2:19.97 at the All-Ohio Championships.
Dettmann's top event is the 1,500-meter race, where she ran a season-best 4:43.16 at the All-Ohio Championships. She also won the same event at the Toledo Invitational with a time of 4:45.02.
Powers is coming off her best run of the season in the 1,500 meters, finishing ninth at the Len Paddock Invitational with a time of 4:43.30.
Seniors Kara Butler and Jamie Roflow will lead a pack of Falcons in the distance events. Butler owns the top two times for the Orange and Brown in the 5,000 meters with times of 17:28.24 and 17:36.59. Butler also leads all Falcon competitors in the 3,000-meter race after finishing first at the Toledo Invitational with a time of 10:16.27.
Roflow has a season-best time of 10:27.14 in the 3,000 meters, but her specialty is the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She finished first just two weeks ago at the Toledo Invitational with a time of 10:57.66.
The pole vault to be a nice opportunity for the Falcons to get on the scoreboard with the help of Sabrina Forstein. According to www.mac-sports.com the junior ranks sixth in the conference in the pole vault with a season-best jump of 3.66 meters, finishing first at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge.
In the other jump categories, McNeal will lead the Falcons in the long jump (season-best 5.93 meters) and triple jump (season-best 11.37 meters).
The throwing events have been some of the strongest events for the Falcons in recent memory. The group is led by a pair of seniors in Whitney Hartman and TaKarra Dunning.
Hartman, the school record-holder in the hammer throw currently ranks fourth in the conference with a season-best throw of 57.66 meters, set at the Toledo Invitational where she won the event. Dunning, a shot put expert, is fifth in the conference with a mark of 15.08 meters.
