CLEVELAND, OHIO - Bowling Green State University sophomore catcher Ryan Schlater was named the Mid-American Conference East Division Player of the Week, the league office announced today. It is the first time Schlater has received the honor from the league.
The St. Paris, Ohio native hit .692 (9-of-14) last week in the four games and he hit .727 (8-of-11) in the three-game Akron series. Schlater hit safely in all four games.
The St. Paris Graham High School product had one hit in two at-bats in the mid-week nonconference game against Oakland last week. In the first game of the Akron series, a 14-9 Falcon victory, Schlater went 4-for-5 with three RBI and one run scored. Three of his four hits were doubles, tying the school single-game record, while his other hit was his first home run of the season. The four hits in a game established a new career high for Schlater.
After going 1-for-2 with a triple, his first of the season, in the 15-4 loss in the middle game of the series, Schlater went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored as the Falcons captured the league regular season and East Division titles with a 17-9 win in the regular season finale. One of his hits was a double.
Schlater has a career-best seven-game hitting streak in progress during which he has hit .538 (14-of-26) with seven runs scored and 12 RBI. Schlater has eight of his 10 doubles for the season in the last 11 games. He is hitting .300 for the season with 21 RBI and 19 runs scored.
