The Falcons pose for a picture at the hotel pool
Costa Rica: Day 2
August 13, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Sorry in advance for the brevity of this entry. We will endeavor to write more tomorrow. We hope to be able to provide photo galleries from the trip at some point as well, but today will not be the day. Without further ado ...
The BGSU women's basketball team's fun continued on Thursday (Aug. 13), the first full day in Costa Rica. The team's first scheduled event was a tour of downtown San Jose at 10:30 a.m. local time, leaving plenty of time to enjoy breakfast at the hotel and then head to the hotel pool area. The team's tour was also enjoyable, as the trip included many interesting sites, and also allowed time to do some shopping for souvenirs of the trip.

Thursday evening marked the Falcons' first on-court test, a game against a local Under-17 program, and BGSU won by a 127-34 score. Seven different players hit double digits in scoring in the game, which featured four 10-minute quarters (with a running clock used for the fourth) and a 24-second shot clock. There was no actual 'shot clock;' rather, the public address announcer would announce the time remaining on the shot clock at various intervals (15 seconds, 10 seconds and five seconds).
As the score might indicate, the shot clock rarely came into play during the majority of the game, as the Falcons scored a large number of fast-break points in the win. Chelsea Albert scored the game's first basket, on a pass from Tracy Pontius just four seconds in, and the Falcons were never headed.
Official statistics were not kept for the game, but Lauren Prochaska had 23 points to lead, as mentioned, no fewer than seven Falcons in double digits. Jen Uhl had 22 points, including 20 in the first half, while Sara Clapper had 21.
In their first game action at BGSU, Tamika Nurse and Maggie Hennegan had 14 and 10 points, respectively. Laura Bugher and Kelly Zuercher each had 10 points as well, while Pontius scored nine and Albert and Maribeth Giese four apiece.
The highlight of Friday's itinerary is a whitewater rafting trip. Check back to BGSUFalcons.com for periodic updates during the Falcons' foreign tour.
