Costa Rica: Day 3
August 14, 2009 | Women's Basketball
Whitewater rafting trip is Friday's highlight
A whitewater rafting excursion was Friday's (Aug. 14) highlight as the BGSU women's basketball team's foreign tour continued. The 20-member travel party boarded a bus at 6:30 a.m. local time, and headed out of the greater San Jose area. Roughly two hours later, the team was at Rio Pacuare for a Costa Rican breakfast. As someone who knows good food when he sees it, let me just take this opportunity to say that the food has been absolutely spectacular at every meal so far.

After breakfast, the team boarded a van (the bus was too big for the roads on the remaining portion of the trip), and headed to the starting point. The Pacuare (pah KWAH ray) is a quintessential tropical river, with amazing views, diverse wildlife and of course, challenging rapids.
The Falcon travel party spent the next four hours facing the challenges of Rio Pacuare, and the team met nearly every challenge. Oh, sure, a few people fell out of their raft -- 5 in all, I believe -- and sure, one of them (without naming names, a male assistant coach), fell out of his raft when there weren't even any rapids to be found. Only raft four, led by Laura Bugher and Maribeth Giese, made it the entire 18 miles without a single person falling out of the boat. But, other than a few aches and pains from muscles that haven't been used in years (I'm mostly speaking for myself here), the group emerged from the river triumphant and unscathed.
