Akron Outlasts Falcons In MAC Opener

Bowling Green, Ohio – In a match that lasted well over two hours, the Akron volleyball team won the final two sets to hand Bowling Green a loss in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams Friday evening, 24-26, 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 15-8.
Emily Kauth tied her career high with 18 kills and Kaitlin Jackson was all over the court, finishing with 10 kills, 15 digs, and six blocks, but the Falcons were unable to put Akron away after holding one set leads twice. Akron's Brionna Patterson entered the match as one of the top hitters in the conference and she did not disappoint, finishing with 24 kills.
The first four sets were all decided by just two points and they were all tight throughout. Bowling Green came back from a 24-23 deficit in the opening set to score three consecutive points and take the early lead. With the score tied at 23-23 in the second set, Akron picked up kills from Kara Smith and Patterson to knot the match.
Bowling Green built a 21-15 lead in the third set but the Zips came storming back with six consecutive points to tie the score but Akron committed two consecutive attack errors and the Falcons got two kills from Jackson down the stretch for the 25-23 win. Set four was again close throughout with the Falcons holding a late 22-21 lead. Three consecutive Bowling Green attack errors gave Akron control and the Zips won the set on a service error to force a fifth and deciding set.
Bowling Green never found a rhythm in the fifth set and never had a lead. Jackson and Kauth paired up for a block that cut an Akron lead to one point at 4-3 but the Zips rattled off four consecutive points and the Falcons never got closer than four the rest of the way.
The Falcons' attack percentage went down in each set, starting with a .316 opener and falling to .207, .184, and .136 before hitting -.125 in the final set. Akron, on the other hand, hit .562 in the last set, picking up 10 kills on 16 attempts with one error.
The Zips struggled early on by committing nine attack errors in each of the first three sets. But Akron cut that number to four in the fourth set and just one in the final set. The Zips also had 18 more digs than Bowling Green and two more service aces.
Akron improves to 9-6 on the year and 1-0 in MAC play, while Bowling Green falls to 7-8 and 0-1. The team will host Buffalo Saturday at 3 p.m.
