Former Falcon Ready for His MLB Call-Up
September 08, 2009 | Baseball
Bowling Green State University baseball alumnus Andy Tracy will see action on a major league field for the fifth time in his career after being called up to the Major Leagues by the Philadelphia Phillies.
Tracy being promoted to the Phillies now makes for the third BGSU alumnus to currently play in Major League Baseball. Nolan Reimold (2003-2005), currently playing in the Baltimore Orioles outfield and Burke Badenhop (2002-2005), pitcher with the Florida Marlins, also represent BGSU in the MLB.
Tracy had been playing with the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs of the International League, the Triple-A affiliate of the Phillies, before the call-up. Through 129 games for the Iron Pigs, Tracy had a team-high .254 batting average, 26 home runs, 96 RBI and 218 total bases. He also led the team in walks (74), extra base hits (50) and runs scored (76). He has hit safely in seven of his last eight games and bat .355 with two homeruns and 11 runs batted in over that time span. He was also named to the International League post-All Star team.
The last time Tracy played in the Major Leagues was in 2008, when the defending World Series Champion Philadelphia Phillies called him up nearly a year ago. In four games, Tracy went 0-2, but recorded an RBI against the New York Mets as a pinch hitter.
He has played in 140 games and has hit a combined 13 homeruns, 42 RBI and hitting .223 in his major league career. He has seen time on the field with the Montreal Expos (2000-01), Colorado Rockies (2004) and Phillies (2008).
Tracy was drafted in the 16th round of the MLB amateur draft by the Montreal Expos in 1996. He has spent time in the minor leagues with affiliates of the Expos, New York Mets (2002), Colorado Rockies (2003-05), Baltimore Orioles (2006) and also spent time in the Japanese Pacific League team, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles (2005).
In his four-year Falcon career, Tracy (1993-96) hit 45 homers and drove in 141 RBI, as both totals rank in BGSU's career top-10 list for both categories. His 45 career homers are tied for first on the all-time BG list with Kelly Hunt, a current member of the Wichita Wingnuts of the American Association of Independent Professional Baseball.
He was inducted in the BGSU Hall of Fame class of 2006.
