Bowling Green, Ohio – Erik Marschall posted his first career double-double but it was not enough as the Bowling Green men's basketball team dropped a disappointing 64-52 decision to Central Michigan in front of a season-high 2,222 fans at Anderson Arena Saturday evening.
Marschall had 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting and added a team-high 10 rebounds but his performance was one of the few bright spots in a game in which the Falcons struggled to find the rhythm offensively. Scott Thomas added a team-high 13 points and Dee Brown had 10 but the team shot just 38 percent from the field and made only 1-of-11 three-point attempts.
Bowling Green led 16-13 midway through the first half but the Falcons scored just five points over the final 9:28 of the half as Central Michigan used a 10-0 run to take the lead and built a 28-21 bulge by the break.
In the second half, Central Michigan extended the lead to 12 on a Robbie Harman three-pointer with 17:12 to play and pushed the lead to 20 on a Jalin Thomas free-throw with 7:28 to go. The Falcons rallied with a three-quarter court trap, getting as close as 10, but Central Michigan made enough free-throws down the stretch to keep BG from getting closer.
Otis Polk started the game in strong fashion but played just nine minutes in the first half after leaving the floor with an injury. He returned in the second half and played nine more minutes but was hampered. He finished with seven points, making all three of his shots attempts, and six rebounds, while adding three blocked shots in that limited action.
Central Michigan shot just 40 percent for the game and made only 6-of-19 three-pointers (32 percent) but the Chippewas held a 38-35 rebounding advantage and went to the free-throw line nine more times than Bowling Green.
Central Michigan improved to 10-9 with the win and 5-2 in MAC play. Bowling Green fell to an identical 10-9 overall and 3-4 in league action. The Falcons will have a quick turn-around, hosting rival Toledo Monday night at 7 p.m.
