Three Bowling Green State University student-athletes have been named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Team for 2009. Juniors Alicia Almond and Katie Stephenson and sophomore Leah Johnson were named to the team, which was announced by the conference office Thursday afternoon (Jan. 7).
Stephenson makes the team for the second consecutive year, having earned the honor in each of the two years she has been eligible for nomination. Almond earned Academic All-MAC Honorable Mention a year ago, in her first year of eligibility. Johnson makes the team for the first time, in the first year that she has been eligible for consideration.
Johnson maintained a perfect 4.00 cumulative grade point average in the College of Academic Enhancement. Almond had a 3.95 cumulative GPA as a health science major. Stephenson, a finance major, had a 3.94 cumulative GPA in her BGSU career at the time of nomination.
A native of Findlay, Ohio (Findlay HS), Almond was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Third Team back in November. She was one of just four Falcons to start all 20 matches in 2009. A mainstay on BGSU's back line, Almond played a total of 1728 minutes, the second-highest total on the team, and scored three points.
Almond had three points on the season. She scored a goal in the Miami game, and assisted on freshman Keely Chandler's game-winning goal vs. Youngstown State. In her career, Almond has played in 47 matches, making 21 starts, and has seven points on three goals and an assist.
Johnson, a native of Wheaton, Ill. (Wheaton Warrenville South), also started all 20 matches in the 2009 season, and had five points on a goal and three assists. She tied for second on the Falcons in assists. Johnson led the team in minutes played, finding herself on the field for 1787 of the Falcons' 1860 total minutes on the year.
Johnson's lone goal of the year came in BGSU's win at Detroit. She had a career-high two assists in that 4-0 win, she also set a new personal standard for points in a game, with four. Johnson had an assist in a 2-0 home victory over YSU as well. She has played in 40 of BGSU's 42 matches over her first two years, starting all 40, and has eight career points on two goals and four assists.
Stephenson, who hails from Lexington, Ohio (Lexington HS), played in all 20 matches in 2009, making 12 starts. Like Almond, Stephenson was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Third Team in November. And, like Almond, Stephenson had three points on a goal and an assist. Her goal came in BGSU's win at Detroit, and she also assisted on Chandler's winner in the YSU match.
As mentioned, Stephenson was named to the Academic All-MAC Team in 2008 as well, and earned ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second-Team accolades that season. In her career, Stephenson has played in 63 of BGSU's 64 matches since her arrival on campus, making 32 starts. She has 16 career points on five goals and six assists.
The Academic All-MAC Women's Soccer Team is the result of voting by faculty athletic representatives at the MAC's member institutions. A total of 32 student-athletes were named to this year's women's soccer team. The number of honorees are the number set for the specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
The remaining student-athletes nominated for the Academic All-MAC Team are recognized as honorable-mention selections. For BGSU, that group includes seniors Jen Czapka, Kaitlyn Kobe and Stacey Lucas, junior Jackie Tamerlano and sophomores Megan Amann and Alyssa Zuccaro.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify for nomination, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior-college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
The Falcons of head coach Andy Richards finished with an overall record of 5-12-3 and a MAC ledger of 1-7-3.
