Susy Grunden Attempts to Defend Her 2009 Individual Championship
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team begins to wind down their fall schedule as they travel this week to the Rosemont Country Club in Fairlawn, Ohio for the 2010 Zippy Invitational.
Hosted by the University of Akron, the event is in its third year, and the Falcons have competed in each of the three events. This year, the team will be opposed by 11 other schools. Ohio University will join BGSU and host Akron as the three Mid-American Conference schools in the field.
Also competing will be: Allegheny College, Bucknell, California (Pa.), Cleveland State, Detroit, Eastern Kentucky, Grand Valley State, Marshall and Oakland.
The tournament consists of 54 holes over two days. On Monday (Oct. 11), the teams will play two rounds of 18. They will return on Tuesday to play the final round. Play on both days begins at 9:30 a.m. with a shotgun start.
Of special note, Tuesday will be Think Pink Day, and teams are encouraged to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness.
In last year's event, the Falcons placed ninth, but Susy Grunden stole the show. Grunden won medalist honors for the first time in her career, in just her fourth career tournament, by carding 226 over the tournament's 54 holes. This included a second-round score of 73. That second round was the difference in the tournament -- Erica Rivard (Toledo) matched Grunden's first and third rounds of 77 and 76. However, Grunden's score of 73 outpaced Rivard by three strokes and ultimately won the tournament by those three shots.
Senior Lauren Glew will travel to for the third time as a Falcon. Two years ago, in the inaugural Zippy Invite, Glew placed tenth by scoring 238, a number that included two rounds of 78.
Joining Grunden and Glew this year will be freshman Bailey Arnold, as well as Amy Ruthenberg and Paula DiFrancesco.
Bowling Green will play for the first time since taking part in the BSU Cardinal Classic two weeks ago. In Muncie, the team tied for sixth place in the 14 team field, while Susy Grunden shot 145 over 36 holes to place third.
A tournament recap and complete stats will be posted right here at BGSUFalcons.com after the conclusion of play on both days of the tournament.
