March 01, 2011 | Women's Golf
The Bowling Green State University women's golf team returns to the links this weekend when they travel to Rio Verde, Ariz. for the 2011 Rio Verde Invitational.
Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan University hosts the three-day, 54-hole tournament. The field of 17 teams includes seven from the MAC, including Akron, Ball State, Eastern Michigan, Ohio and Toledo.
Defending tournament champion Michigan returns to the tournament and is joined from the Big Ten by Penn State. The Falcons will face two other in-state schools (Cincinnati and Xavier), as well.
Five of the 17 teams are ranked in the top 100 nationally according to Golfstat.com, including MAC schools Western Michigan and Toledo.
The Falcons have competed in Rio Verde during each of head coach Stephanie Young's six seasons with the team. This year's tournament returns to Rio Verde Country Club's White Wing course for the first time since 2006, Young's debut season with the Falcons.
White Wing is a par-72 course that sprawls over 6,317 yards. The front nine is 2,956 yards and features three short par-three holes, while the back nine goes 3,359 yards. It includes three par-five holes, one of which is 546 yards from tee to pin.
The tournament begins at 1:00 p.m. MST on Friday (March 4) with a shotgun start. Action on Saturday and Sunday (March 5-6) begins with shotgun starts at 8:00 a.m. MST. One round of 18 holes will be played on each day of the tournament.
Six members of the BGSU team will travel to Arizona – Bailey Arnold, Kelsey Benson, Paula DiFrancesco, Lauren Glew, Marisa Glew and Amy Ruthenberg. Five will play in the team tournament; the lineup will be determined after a practice round on Thursday.
As the Falcons return to action, they remain on pace to break the program record for team scoring average over an entire season. Their average in five fall tournaments was 318.42 over 12 rounds.
The school record is 323.36. Five of the team's 12 rounds to date have been under 310.
The team has finished sixth overall twice and has four top-ten finishes. Individually, Bailey Arnold (80.20) and Lauren Glew (80.22) lead the Falcons in scoring average. Amy Ruthenberg and Paula DiFrancesco are both at 83 or better.
Aside from the team tournament, there will be an individual tournament at Rio Verde's Quail Run course on Saturday and Sunday. The BGSU athlete that does not compete in the team tournament will play in the individual 36-hole event.
